Surgeons death in Rotherham

Surnames: Knowles, Beard
My great great grandmother Elizabeth knowles was born in 1835 in Kimberworth. I have not yet found her birth registration. She married Samuel Beard in 1856. On her marriage certificate her father is given as Charles Knowles, Surgeon. My grandmother always told us that her great grandfather was a doctor, although we did not believe her given that all the family we knew about were miners. However, now of course we do, so there is bound to be some grain of truth in the other stories passed down.
We have been told that Charles Knowles died when he was returning from visiting a patient - he froze to death on his horse. We believe this to have happened somewhere between 1838 and 1841.

This must have been news worthy at the time. If anyone has any information than I would be grateful or could look up Elizabeths baptism and confirm her fathers occupation.

If you think he was a surgeon, you could contact the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London. He may be in Plarr's Lives (you can access some of this on line) it is a biography of some of the Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons. There are also Colleges in Edinburgh, Glasgow & Dublin (some surgeons qualified there even if they worked in England) often surgeons at this time started off as Royal Naval surgeons (Try Steele's Navy List). Going on another of your replies, he could have been an Apothocary - sort of Chemist / GP. At that time the divisions between Physician, surgeon and apothocary were a bit blurred.

Very late in coming to this so this may/may not be news. Due to the anniversary of WW1 and having a few days off I' ve tried a bit harder to dig deeper into my own tree which one branch is Hart/Beard/Knowles. My Grandmother Lizzie Beard was from near Rotherham and the only grandparent I came to know but still have vivid memories. I have her prayer book so have loads of names in it but also some surprises. Whilst digging deeper I discovered that Charles Knowles appears as a surgeon in the 1856 census according to another search on this site. But agree that Mining was the usual employment and can only imagine the sacrifices these huge families made having to live in 2 up 2 down rows of terraces. Ironically my Grandfather (bit of a black sheep) then built Poucher St in Rotherham which can still be viewed today on Google Map.
