I research my surname worldwide, and while visiting the Arras War Memorial, and the other major ones in Belgium/France recently, came across that of Ernest John Ridgway, Pte.,Essex Regiment 1st.Bn., No.41574, died 14th April,1917.He came from a family of Stone Masons in Maltby, and there were others there in that Occupation. Information will be obtained from the Essex Museum who hold copies of the Regiment's records, and I would welcome any other Maltyby/Rotherham information, or indeed information about other families of this name in the area.

I have been researching the Norman family from Rotherham and I have an ancestor John Norman that I believe married a Lydia Ridgeway daughter of William Ridgway in the late 1700's date unknown. I am not certain if the Ridgeways came from Rotherham but I think they did.

They had numerous children starting in 1792 as far as I can determine with William Norman, who became a chemist in Rotherham.

I would be grateful for any other information on the Ridgeways at or around this time that you may have

Hello Allen

I am descended from the Ridgways of Maltby. I have this Ridgway branch reasonably well researched, back to the early 1700s. Ernest John Ridgway was a son of my gg grandfather’s brother. Ernest’s name is inscribed on a the war memorial in Maltby. I’m happy to share all the information I have with you.

Regards

Peter Ridgway

Delighted to hear from you Peter.I research Ridg(e)ways all over the U.K., and many worldwide. I found your ancestor's name on the memorial @ Arras recently, and then discovered he was in the local Essex Regiment. I had hoped to do a small article on a number of soldiers in WW1 in our annual free newsletter 'Ridge Way Routes' and any info about Ernest would be greatly appreciated. Will let you have a copy of last year's if you send me your address per e-mail. I have often been intrigued by the Rotherham Stonemasons and how they fit into the various Ridg(e)way families in the U.K. I have a maternal'' Nightingale" who was an important stonemason in London about the same time as yours. Later this week I intend going into our Essex Regiment Museum to try to get some info on the battle he was in at the time of his death. I hope to publish this year's edition in early December. Look forward to hearing from you. Best Wishes, Alan Ridgway

I know very little about the Rotherham Ridg(e)ways apart from what is available in the 1881 Census I have. I am trying to expand this by correspondence recently with Peter Ridgway who descends from this group of Ridgways; I hope to hear from him shortly. My Ridg(e)ways in the main came from the North Buckinghamshire area and are well-documented there and the earliest of the Lydia's I have on record dates from about the mid-1820's - sorry.

Peter,
Sorry but neither of them has arrived for either day as yet, although I still seem to be getting the usual amount of e-mail, so things seem O.K.at this end so far as I can judge. If you want to phone and let me have your address I will send you copies of what I obtained at the Essex Regiment Museum about the battle.

All Best Wishes, Alan
