My grandfather Joseph Johnson gave his address on 29th April 1915 as Poplar House, Quarry Hill Rotherham. He was about 35 at the time and signing up with the 3rd Northumberland Fusiliers at Attercliffe.
The only other thing that I know about him is that he was a miner and his father's name was William (also a miner). I do not know his mother's name.

Does anyone know where the nearest mine to this address at that time was?

Also any information about the address or possible birth/baptism record greatfully received. Does Quarry Hill still exist?
