To help with your request, can your friend give you any more details to go on. ie The full name of the person he/she is starting with and any dates to go on.

The best advice I can offer at the moment for your friend is to collect as much information from any living relatives. These are always the best start to your tree. This will then lead you to the various places you need to go, web sites and so on. I can point you in the general direction if you wish.
