My father, Daniel Cavender was born in 1910 at 71 King St. Masbrough and along with his siblings attended the Ebenezer Wesleyan Chapel. Can anyone help me locate this, no doubt long demolished, chapel?

Hi Ann

The Ebenezer Wesleyan Reform Chaple is still standing , it was built in 1872 on the site of Samuel Walker's Masbrough Hall on Hall St just off Chaple walk, Masbrough, King St was just a short walk away.It closed quite a while ago and it is now the Jamia Mosque.

Regards
John

Hello Anne
This comment will probably not be helpful to you any more, as you probably now know the answer to your original query.
But let me say a word, nonetheless.
The Ebenezer Chapel is located about half way up (there's a slight slope) the left side of Chapel Walk in Masbrough. Chapel Walk was so called because of the Masborough Independent Chaepel at the top (and that's very near King Street which I knew well).
Between 1937 and 1946 I lived at no.1 Chapel Walk, which was just a stone's throw away from the Ebenezer, in fact about 50 metres away. From a child's viewpoint, to me it was always an intimidating and austere-looking dark stone building.
I've just had a look at that area on GoogleEarth, and the chapel is still standing, as is the Independent Chapel and the also the Walker Mausoleum. But both places are now serving different purposes from their original ones.
My old home on Chapel Walk is no longer there, I notice.
I hope you find what you're looking for,
Good wishes - Dennis Prestidge

Hallo Dennis
How interesting to see your letter about Chapel walk, Rotherham. A descendant, my grandfathers brother, James Shillitto lived at no 14 Chapel Walk in 1881 aged 47. James & Eleanor on other census records are seen at 1861 - Chemist Lane, 1871 - 6 College Rd. Before he married he also lived with his parents Jonathan & Elizabeth in, 1841 - Well Gate, 1851 - 30 College St, so never moved far away, I have gone back to 1725 and they are still in Rotherham! James & Eleanor had eight living children in 1881 between the ages of 21 (John) and 3 (Jim). The two eldest John & Richard were named after James brothers who died age 9 & 11 in the Masbrough boat disaster of 1841, which claimed the lives of over 50 children. It is well documented in the Rotherham archives on-line! if you have connecions to Rotherham, it is a very sad but compelling read from the original newpaper reports of the time, there is also a memorial in the Rotherham Churchyard, which I have yet to visit as I live in Surrey.
I am starting to think, as I research my Rotherham ancestors that they may have been non conformist, one aunt of James named Ann Shillitto b 1802, married a Kilburn Hall, they had a son John Kilburn Hall who moved to Utah, I believe he was a Mormon so maybe his parents were too? I have had contact with his living ancestor, which is great. The majority of my ancesters were baptised in independant churches, they may have been members of the Ebenezer Weslyan Chapel who knows, but that just adds to the colour and the fun of researching your family tree I think!
In those far off days children did not have the luxury of going to Schools outside there own area. Can you tell me whic School you attended? if is just possible it may have been the same one, that is if it was quite an old one.
I shall look on Google thanks to your very informative letter. I hope to hear from you!
Regards Joan Chapman

Hello Joan
Thanks for your message, though I doubt that I’m going to be able to help you any more; however, there may be a few small points.
I’m grateful for your comments about the 1841 boat disaster, and I will certainly read up on that, as I know nothing about it.
Although our family home was at no.1 Chapel Walk, there were no houses immediately opposite us. In fact even-numbered houses began probably about 50 metres up the Walk, just about directly opposite the Ebeneezer, and that chapel was located on our side, the odd-numbered side.
Certainly, without any doubt at all, I would say that anyone living at no.14 Chapel Walk would also (as I had to) attend the Thornhill primary school, situated in Tenter Street, “up t’Clough”.
You mention two locations (College Road and College Street) but these two places were not close to each other; they were probably a mile or so apart. Whereas College Road was at the top of Chapel Walk (King Street merged into it), College Street was (and is) in the very heart of the town. If you look at a map of Rotherham, you will see that College Street is situated adjacent to the main square, All Saints Square, next to the towering parish church. College Street is not very long at all, and it soon continues (in a straight line) becoming Wellgate, which you also mention. (I’ve been trying hard to place Chemist Lane, which you mention, but it’s gone.)
I live a little further away from Rotherham than you do. I’ve lived in northern Thailand for the last 18 years, and my visits to England occur infrequently, though I am planning a trip later on this year.
With good wishes to you - Dennis

How lovely to hear from you Dennis, and so quickly, and all the way from wonderful Thailand, the marvels of the internet!

You are wrong when you say you can't add much, you have definately closed a few queries for me. I suspect now that James and his family would have attended the Chapel. And the School! I have poured over the ordnance survey map for ages but did not know which one they would have attended, also my Grandfather Samuel (James brother)lived at 45 Hope Street! in the 1881 and 1891 census. He then moved to Normanton when his first wife died, he was a Railway Wagon Inspector so I presume he followed a job? my mother was the eldest child from his second family, he also had eight children!

I assumed that Chapel street and road were one and the same! so that is cleared up too! thankyou so much Dennis.

Chemist Lane is on Autoroute, so I assume it is still there, it is up Greasborough Street, its just a cul-de-sac, turn right into Thames Road, then right round a curve, so very close to where the school was. I have looked up Thornhill Primary School and its been rebuilt, I assume, in Walter Street.

I hope you are enjoying life in Thailand, I'm sure it's far removed from your childhood memories, but then memories when you are young colour out all the grey don't they?

Once again thank you and I hope you have a good 2008!
Regards Joan

Hello again Joan
Thanks for the street directions. I have now located Chemist Lane (that's a relief). And although Thornhill Primary School might well have been rebuilt (I don't know), it is certainly there in the same spot. I knew the address always as being in Tenter Street, which is immediately to the north of the school, as is Hope Street. Now Walter Street is to the west of the school. So the school could be said (then and now) to be BOTH in Tenter Street and Walter Street. A small point!
Good wishes to you - Dennis
