Looking for any information about the Salsbury (Salisbury/Salsberry) Family of Portsmouth, Scioto, Ohio. Earliest mention is William Salsbury from a 1799 deed for a property in Alexandria, OH (Adams Co.) William Salsbury died in or around Portsmouth in 1806. His sons, William (1792) and James (1794-1868) were indentured as apprentices in Portsmouth. Nothing more is known of William Sr. or Jr..
It seems that William Salsbury, Sr. also had a daughter Nancy and may have had another son named John. Names that were mentioned in the indentures and guardianship cases are David Gharky, Abraham Bibby & Samuel Brown.
James Salsbury, my 4th great grandfather, was a Saddler in Portsmouth. He married Nancy Kehoe in Portsmouth in 1819. He died there in April 1868 and Nancy followed in September of 1868. James and Nancy had 9 children, 6 of whom survived childhood; William 1820, Helen 1822, James 1827, Anne 1835, Charles C. 1836 & Murtaugh K. 1840.
Other Surnames related to the family are :
Brown, Burt, Kendall, Kehoe, Metz, Sprinkle, Thompson, Wright..The Salsbury family had lived in Portsmouth for over 100 years when James Salsbury, son of James & Grandson of William, died there in 1905. I don't think any Salsbury has been there again until I made a trip to Portsmouth in 2007 and "met" all the Salsburys at Greenlawn Cemetery.
Thank You,
Lynette (Salsbury) Greenwald
