Don't let that last post discourage you. Check out the Mason, WV list at genweb or the Scioto, OH listserve. There are tons of cousins working both sides of the river and somebody knows something. Also, check out the publications section of Ancestry.com with your keywords. I know somebody will have information about it. I have gleaned lots of information and I don't live anywhere near the Ohio River. I have met lots of cousins and other helpers. Don't give up.

Yes, it would seem we are researching the same individuals. Charles Kemp was my direct ancester and the other two were his brother-in-laws. I don't have much on them but would be glad to send you what I have on Charles. Let me know if you want to see it. Charles Kemp

Has anyone found any information on a possible steamboat accident in 1824? Something happened in our family about that time period that left my gg grandfather not knowing who his parents or siblings were. I would be very interested in any information that anyone might be able to offer. Thanks so much. Larry Marks

The packet boat "Tell City" sank in 1917 at a dam at Little Hocking, Ohio, south of Belpre. The pilot house is now on the lawn of the Ohio River Museum in Marietta, Ohio. The boat was built in Evansville,IN, in 1889.

I didn't find answer, but I found this excellent resource on the subject, in case other steamboat researchers pass through this thread.

I have read many accounts of steamboat accidents. They can be found in many of the newspapers that were effected by the accidents. The bigger the loss the more circulation and the longer the stories got.

If there was a really large loss, the accidents would be reported in the commercial sections of the newspapers in New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Cleveland, Etc.

If I were looking of a specific accident, I would start checking the newspaper in Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and St Louis. I would also check the large cities in the area like Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Columbus where the affects of the accident would be felt.

Because of the canals in Indiana and Ohio, the cargoes lost would effect merchants in any town or city receiving cargoes that were on the boat that was lost. This could effect those towns on the larger navigable Rivers in Kentucky, and the areas mentioned.

I have seen several in the Fort Wayne Newspapers, and found them in others.

Sorry if I can not help with the specific accident.

PS: I googled for steamboat accidents on the Ohio 1800" and found many hits. This one gives several accounts.
