Hello fellow "Georgia" Payne's,
My great-grandfather William Calvin Payne was born 03 Dec 1867 in Gilmer Co, Georgia and died 01 Aug 1949 in Rome, Floyd Co, Ga.
Wm Calvin Payne was the son of Lewis Farmer Payne born 26 Apr 1847 in Franklin Co, Ga died 03 Mar 1926 Calhoun, Gordon Co, Ga and Elizabeth [Nicholson] born 10 Jan 1842 in Ga died 21 Jul 1928 Calhoun, Gordon Co, Ga.
Lewis Farmer Payne was the son of Greenberry Payne born abt 1797 in Franklin Co, Ga died before 1870 in Ga and Rhoda Ayres born abt 1808 in NC and died after Jun 1870 in Ga.
The information that follows is according to our Payne ancestry research compiled by my grandfather Norman Emory Payne & great-grandfather Wm Calvin Payne in the 1920's (note: there was at that time an ancient Payne family Bible that had been passed down for several generations - it disappeared just after my great-grandfather died):
Greenberry Payne was the son of John Payne who died abt 1802 in Franklin Co, Ga and Nancy Walters. ALSO,
John Payne was the son of John Payne Sr and Annica [Ayers]. The following are direct quotes from the notes made by my Great-grand father William Calvin Payne: (1) "G/m Annica Ayers & g/f John Payne were Quakers & she was named for a Quaker leader, John Annica. G/m Annica Ayers 1m John Payne,Sr (record in a NC Quaker Meeting note "John & Annica Payne recvd into church membership) & after his death, 2m his brother Thomas Payne." (2) "In 1784, g/f & a large contingent of kinspeople (many of them Quakers) moved from Pittsylvania Co,Va to NC to raise a crop for 2 seasons & then on to Franklin Co Georgia 1yr after the area was ceded by the Indians." (3) " G/m Annica [Ayers] parents were Nathaniel Ayers who died 03 Sep 1776 in Halifax Co, Va and Rhoda whose maiden name I do not know"

I think I come from the same Payne family and I have been looking for a very long time. I descend from Hiram Payne who is the son of Greenbury Payne. I find one discrepancy in your message and would like to know if you have found any additional information. On the 1850 and 1860 census for Gilmer County Ga. Greenbury is shown with 10 kids and his wife is listed as Dorinda. Could this be the same Ayers person? Any help you can give will be so appreciated.

Thank you.

So happy to meet you, Cousin Sue!!!
What timing!! Just yesterday I made a note to try and find out who Uncle Hiram Payne married and to find him on the 1860+ census': true!
I had never heard of "Derinda" until 3 weeks ago when the widow of one of our cousins mentioned her as the wife of our g/father Greenberry Payne. Until 3 weeks ago I had not researched my Paynes personally except for my Great-grandfather William Calvin Payne's children and some of his downline. Everything else I have at this point on my Payne's is from the personal records my Great-Grandfather William Calvin Payne & my Grandfather Norman Emory Payne Sr gathered in the 1920's-1930's and the few census and marriage records I have found in the last 3 weeks...
well!! big as life.....

.....where was 3g-grandpa Greenberry in 1870? dead?
It is possible they were wrong about Rhoda or perhaps 3g-Grandpa Greenberry had 2 wives or maybe his wife was Rhoda Derinda or maybe Rhoda Ayres is just plain wrong...?
As I mentioned, there's a lot of census work and record digging I haven't done yet to prove who is who and what is correct and not correct in the research papers I inherited..
My 2nd Great-Grandfather Lewis Farmer Payne was born 26 Apr 1847 in Franklin Co Ga and died 03 Mar 1926. He married Elizabeth [Nicholson] born 10 Jan 1842 - died 21 Jul 1928. They married about 1866 and are buried together with a double headstone in Calhoun, Gordon Co Ga.

Please be patient with me - I have so many irons in the fire I don't know which way is up! I hadn't intended to start my Payne research at this time but as I always say, "The 'grandfathers' will let you know when their time has come to be found".
My grandfather, Norman Emory Payne, was the only one of the Payne's I know of who left Georgia when he moved to Texas in 1920. He was a devout family man and he kept a close relationship with all of his Georgia kinfolk until his death in 1977.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you and sharing our common ancestry!
Your cousin Kathye,
Red River County, Texas

Hello Kathye,

I descend from Champness Payne, son of Thomas Payne and Yanaka (Annica?) Ayers. My line is documented up to this point but I have no documentation proving who Thomas' parents were or who Yanaka's parents were. Do you have any information or documentation on the Payne or Ayers families that you would be willing to share? Or, perhaps you can point me in the direction of some information? I live in Atlanta so maybe there is someplace here (or nearby) that I can look for information?

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Katherine

Hi Catherine - what a terrific surprise!!!!
I will share anything and everything I have or can get with you but I am leaving for Houston in about an hour - be back Wednesday.
I sent a copy of your query to a descendant of of our uncle Shrewsberry Payne - he is by far the better-researched and better-informed researcher regarding our Payne ancestry.
But please don't exclude me because I'm not!!!
At this time, I am "inclined to believe" that Thomas was the son of William Payne Sr so I am going to send you a WordPad doc entitled "Halifax doc" - I will pre-screen it for virus.
Then, I will get back with you next week when I get home.
Cousin Kathye

Hi G,
I have done so little work on my Payne's to date - so far I know "my" Payne's were in Va 1750+ and went to Franklin Co Ga in 1784 but that's the only places I personally know of.
But, I've got a suggestion as to where you might find someone who knows about your Payne's.....
There is a PAYNE surname only mailing list you can email:
PAYNE-L@rootsweb.com
There are lots of longtime Payne researchers who use this mailing list to exchange information - you really ought to sign up!
Meanwhile, I will save your message just in case I stumble across your folks one day. I wish you much success in 2003
