I’m trying to solve a 61 year mystery. I’m trying to find out about my paternal grandfather. First, I will give the clues that I have, then the story behind it.
His name was W.C. Ferguson. He was born in the 1920's. He was in the Service (which branch, I don’t know) and was on leave during the summer of 1944 in Georgia (I’m guessing Floyd or one of the surrounding counties) to visit family. During this particular leave, he dated a woman by the name of Willie Mae Palmer.
Now, the story. My father’s mother was Willie Mae Palmer (b. 1926). During the summer of 1944 she had a fling with a gentleman by the name of W.C. Ferguson who was home on leave from the service. When W.C.’s time was up, he returned to the service and Willie Mae never saw him again. Unbeknownst to W.C., this fling left something behind. Willie Mae was pregnant with what was to be my father. My father was born 3/22/1945 in Rome, Georgia. Now I’m not sure if Willie Mae lived there or went there to have him. But this is why I think this all happened in Floyd county or close to it anyway. This is how I ended up with the last name Palmer, also. In a perfect world, my father would have been a Ferguson and of course so would I. But instead, he ended up with my grandmother’s maiden. Now after being a Palmer for the last 37 years it still seems strange to me that I should really be a Ferguson!!!
Willie Mae is now deceased. The clues that I have are what she had told my father. She never knew what the W.C. stood for, if anything at all. The correct spelling of Ferguson is not known either. My guess is that it is spelled this way.
This is where I need help. W.C. Ferguson would never of known of this. This makes the search more difficult. If he is still alive, he might remember Willie Mae Palmer back in ‘44. That would make things easier!!! Otherwise I have a mystery that may never be solved. I’m just interested in finding out about my biological grandfather and the family he might have had after the service (which would be half-family to me). ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!
