Surnames: Eastow, Hobbs
Trying to figure out these abbreviations in this description of William Eastow:

Eastow, *William, Newbury, freem. 13 Mar. 1639, rem. that yr. to Hampton, for wh. he was rep. 1644, 8 and 9, d. 23 Nov. 1655; had Sarah, wh. m. Maurice Hobbs; and Mary, m. Thomas Marston. Each of these had ch. nam. in their gr.f.'s will of 16 Oct preced. his d.

"Eastow, William, of Newbury, freemason(?)removed(?)that year(?) to Hampton, for which(?) he was ?1644,8 and 9, died(?)23 Nov. 1655; had Sarah, wh(?)married(?) Maurice Hobbs; and Mary married(?) Thomas Marston. Each of these had children(?)named(?)in their grandfather's(?)will of 16 Oct preceeded?) his death(?).

That's just what I think - not looking at anything official on abbreviations.

Thank you -- really wondering about the "rem. that yr. to Hampton, for wh. he was rep. 1644, 8 and 9," Was he some sort of representative for Hampton? If so, where would I find such info?

He isn't even in my direct line, but I'm fascinated by the info I have found on William.

I think it means 'removed that year to Hampton' meaning he moved. The other part I wanted to say ' he was reposed' but I don't think that's right.

You could try the Mass Archives -archives@sec.state.ma.us
- that's their email. Or post another question for translation since I really wasn't much help.

Sorry
Margaret

> "Eastow, William, of Newbury, freemason(?)

In Savage "freem." means freeman.

He was a representative to the General Court. Hampton was part of Old Norfolk County in Massachusetts until it became part of New Hampshire in 1680, when Old Norfolk County was abolished.
