Hello,

My name is Cliff and I'm writing from Seattle. I was delighted to find your history page and events on Tensed, Idaho. I would be very interested in upcoming historical events, such as those past sessions held in Clem's store.

A little about me and my connection to Tensed; My mother was raised in Tensed and DeSmet in the late 1920's and 1930's, sometimes moving back and forth between St. Ignatius, MT., and Tensed. She spent a lot of time at the Sacred Heart convent school. Her father was Eugene Sol Louie and he had a cabin about a quarter mile north of Tensed, where a refinery or some sort of industrial building had been constructed, once the cabin was torn down. The last time I checked his hand-dug well was still working. He was a noted builder of log cabins and as recently as 1994 I was able to find a "ruins" of one of his old cabins just west of Tensed, on an old road, with the help of Aripa brothers.

I was fortunate to get to know some early residents of the area, namely Mary Garrick (her neighbor) and Lawrence Aripa and his brothers, Happy LaSarte, Henry SiJohn, and a few others. I used to love to hear the stories my mother would tell of growing up in the area, of the wheat harvest time before large combines and machinery took over from human power.

I drive over every few years to clean up my grandfather's grave at DeSmet and I would be very interested in particpating in any historical society meetings or related events.

Thank you very much,

Cliff
Seattle, WA

The deadline is approaching to nominate a man for the 2006 Local Men In History award dinner to be held the first Saturday in October. Nominees must be male and have lived a great part of their life in either Benewah County or Latah County, Idaho or Whitman County, Washington. They need not be living to be considered for this honor.
The McCroskey Regional Historical & Genealogical Society is a new society that formed in October of 2004 and serves West Benewah County and North Latah County, Idaho and NE Whitman County, Washington. October 4th at 7PM will be our first annual meeting. The Society regularly meets the first Tuesday of each month downstairs at the Tensed Community Building.

October 1st we will be kicking off National Family History Month with a "Local Men in History" honoree dinner to be held at 5PM at the Tensed Community Building. Each March we honor 10 women in conjunction with National Women's History Month and each October we honor 10 men in conjunction with National Family History Month. Members of the community are encourage to nominate individuals for these honors and once nominations are received members of the Society vote for 10 men or women. The Society collects photos and biographies of the honorees and present a powerpoint slide show during the dinner and create two identical scrapbooks featuring the honorees. One scrapbook is archived permanently with the Society and the mate to it is raffled off during the dinner. This has proved to be a popular feature of our event and serves to gather biographical information about the honorees for archiving by the Society as well as a sharing of local history from one generation to another within our community.

Our website address is: www.McCroskeySociety.org

Thank you for your enquiry,
Karen Calisterio
President
McCroskey Regional Historical & Genealogical Society

Jan mid-month meeting

At the Janauary 4th meeting it was decided that the society would hold a mid-month (informal) meeting in the afternoon at Clem's store. This meeting would allow some of the seniors in the communit the opportunity to attend since most of them don't like to go out at night (especially in the winter).. This mid-month meeting would be along the lines of a "History Hour with Mildred" where old-timers could get together and chat about the "old times". <ildred Synold is a a long time resident and proprietor of Clems's store. During these history hours, old timers would be encouraged to bring pictures and we would provide scanning services to put them on CD and the society would retain copies. Also, we plan to video tape these monthly history hours. The first history hour will be on January 20th at 1:00 p.m. immediately following the senior citizen's center lunch. Everyone is encouraged to attend.... Also final plans for the "Heritage Dinner" scheduled for Sunday Feb 27th were agreed upon. Mildred Synold is chair of the Dinner committee, Faith Harvey is in charge of entertainment for the dinner and Kathy Lanning is in charge of the decorating committee for the dinner. Tickets are on sale now! Adults $8; Children 12 & under $2. The dinner will go from noon to 3 p.m. and at 3 p.m. a chinese auction will be held to auction off donated goods and services by area merchants and citizens. Kathy Lanning is making a quilt with historic images of the area and the society will be selling drawing tickets for this quilt at the door.

I am very glad to learn of the new society featuring
Benewah County. You can expect my membership
application within the week.

I have been researching my family in St. Maries for
five years, including an onsite visit three years ago.
I have a great deal of St. Maries related information,
publications, photographs, and misc.resource material
in my personal home library. If I can be of any assistance
to other members please let me know. I would be glad
to provide (limited) free lookups and hope to establish
serious exchanges of resources and research between
members and visitors. I can provide a comprehensive
outline of my resources if interested. As well, I have most
if not all of the genealogical subscription databases as I
perform more intensive research services at a very modest
fee. My primary research is concentrated in the Pacific
Northwest,Oregon,Eastern Washington and Western Idaho,
Benewah,Latah, and Kootenai County. I do Oregon death
certificates/obits,Washington death and birth certs. 1907-1953
(microfilm death/birth certificate copies, NOT certified)
and am but a mile from Idaho death certificates on microfilm,
1911-1936. As you are aware, many Idahoans jump the line
over the decades. I charge a modest fee $5 to $7.50 per
certificate plus postage. Contact me at:
cmjones@teleport.com

Congratulations! on this new venture! It's high time
Benewah County gets some attention!
