Isaac Allerton[1] had two grandaughters, one named Rebecca Maverick[3] and another named Sarah Cushman [3]. Incredibly, both of these grandaughters married the same person, a John Hawkes in Lynn, MA. Rebecca Maverick was his first wife. She died in childbirth giving birth to Adam Hawkes, their sole child. Sarah Cushman [3], his second wife, had several children with Adam Hawkes.
"Mayflower Marriages" includes the marriage of Mercy Hawkes to Jonathan Hart in 1734 (Lynn, V.R.). However Lynn Vital Records contains no record of her birth. Also, the tree on ancestry.com has her birth date as 1723 which means she was 11 when she was married. I have assumed she had to be at least 16 when she was married, so have moved her birth date to at least 1708, though she was probably older. Her husband, Jonathan Hart was born in 1710.
By a process of elimination I have concluded that she could have been the daughter of either
1)Moses Hawkes[4] (son of Rebecca Maverick[3] and John Hawkes) born 1659 in Lynn (Lynn V.R.) and his wife Margaret Coggeswell (marriage recorded in Lynn V.R., 1698), who, according to Lynn V.R. had 4 children in the same age range as Mercy Hawkes; or
2. John Hawkes [4], b. 1688 (Lynn V.R.) who married Abigail Floyd of Boston (Lynn V.R., 1698) and had a daughter named Sarah, b. 1699 (Lynn V.R.).
The descendants of Isaac Alleton named Hawkes are, as you can imagine, many.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how to proceed? I guess I could get the Mayflower Book on Cooke but I don't want to pay $45.
