Surnames: HOPKINS-SNOW
I just had my Ancestry DNA done and filtered results via surname (Snow) and place (Massachusetts). I got a huge list of distant cousin hits and nearly all traced back to Nicholas Snow and Constance Hopkins. A few did not go back far enough but they had the surname and place. I also have several other "160 Families" lines and many of those names appeared as common names with my Snow line. The GSMD is giving me fits on documentation, but I am now very, very sure my double Hopkins-Snow line is legit. Any news on Hopkins DNA?

How are you linked to Nicholas Snow & Constance Hopkins? Although the Mayflower Society doesn't accept my line thru the Doane family (Daniel Doane m. Constance Snow), my Ancestry DNA has matched me with several people who are also descendants of Stephen Hopkins. and he is the only common ancestor. Just trying to find a way through DNA to prove this line. Wondering if anyone else linked thru the Doane family have noticed any similar DNA matches? Thanks

Just because you show common matches doesn't mean it is proof. Your shared DNA may come from some other shared ancestors. Or with ancestors this far back, it could simply be that it is the effect of a small common gene pool.

Autosomal DNA can only be a hint for this remote an ancestor. You will have to come up with documentation to prove the relationship.

Some of the other trees may be incorrect and you actually have a different set of common ancestors.

You'll want to revisit your DNA page.

They re-did the algorithm at the end of 2014 and everyone I know had a huge drop in the number of people in their results that had "matched" before. When they started looking at just DNA and not at the names that matched in the trees some people lost limbs and branches because there hadn't been a connection to begin with.

Look into downloading your raw data from Ancestry and putting it on GEDmatch.com for free. Google for reviews.

Here's a good article on the distribution of DNA. http://www.isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_statistics Even at 8 generations, the percentage of autosomal DNA inherited from an ancestor is a small part of one percent. Mayflower ancestors are 10 or more generations away. Your chance of having any of the DNA of one of your Mayflower ancestors is infinitesimal. The chance of being able to confirm that you are descended from a Mayflower passenger by comparing your DNA to another confirmed descendant would be meaningless unless you and that descendant were already closely related and you knew that the relationship lead to the Mayflower passenger by way of a paper trail.
