My grand father was a member and possibly an officer in the assoc. In early 1950, I remember going with him to the offices. Not sure of the exact location but near 6th and Lombard Street in Phila. It was like a credit and lending financial organization for Jews who came from Europe. I imagine in the early days it was difficult for them to get loans or credit. This was like a credit union. His name was Chaim Kessler.

B'Nai Eleazar

I am interested in any members who were part of, recognize, or know anything about Bnai Eleazar or B'Nai Eleazar West, or family members or their descendants who were a part of the society. B'Nai Eleazar, which literally means, "Children of Eleazar," was a "cousins club" that served to help relatives stay in touch, have social events, and provide a place for loved ones to be buried. It is still active today. The organization was incorporated in 1925, with many members being buried at "The Riverside" Saddle Brook, New Jersey. Several members started a secondary group called "B'Nai Eleazar West" out in California, but I don't know where they were being buried.

The majority of people came to the United State in the early 1800's to 1900's and were from Volkovysk, Bielorussia.

There are many surnames involved in the family, some of the biggest groups would be Friedman, Levine, Kalmans, Kalmanowitz, Belitz, Claster, Hewett, Gelb, Filmer, Allen, Katz, Loner, Howritz, Dubroff, Horowitz, Lieberman, Edelstein, Elkin, Freedman, Fried, Goodstein, and many many others.

There are groups of people that I know are related, but I have been unable to put the pieces together.

Thanks very much for your notes. I have been trying to find the records of the Alliance but so far have had no luck. Since I do not live in the Saginaw area that has made it difficult.

I will continue to work on it and if I find out anything I will let you know. My phone number is 412-207-2939. I do know a bit about the organization and would be happy to help if I can.

Louis A.
My great great grandfather was a member, I found this on his obit.(1927) When he came to America from Canada he did not read or write English. When asked his name, it sounded like Moran so that is what was written. I do know this was not correct, maybe Marian?? so I was hopping to find the Alliance's records to see the spelling. This is a long shot but not sure what else to do. Any info, please keep me posted, thanks

I grew up in Philadelphia and I remember my grandmother had newspapers or some literature from Boslover in her house all the time. This was in the 50's and early 60's. I never asked what kind of organization it was. I never had the impression that it was a family organization. Her name was Fannie Chepin and later Fanny Bronstein.

However no one has replied to my messages.

If you have more direct contact info for the San Francisco (Anna K.) lodge, or the national organization or even another lodge near San Francisco, please pass it on.
Memberships: which & why?

I wish there were a more generic place to post this question since it applies to any and all organizations that recognize particular connections.

This is just a query for individuals, not to open up promotion of any organizations: Why did you join a genealogy-related organization? Did you remain a member? How much did the organizaiton help you with your own research? Did you find other benefits, perhaps unexpected ones? Please feel free to answer as many as you wish. You don't need to name the group if you don't want to, but please tell what kind of a group it is (i.e., pioneer ancestor, national heritage, veteran of specific war, etc.).

My perspective: I'm eligible for membership in more organizations than I feel it's practical to join. I like to support those that help with research by maintaining records, rehabbing old cemeteries, and that kind of thing. Community service is nice, too. Communicating with kindred spirits is also a positive. On the other hand, membership fees add up, and sometimes, an org isn't exactly what I thought it would be. One member of a lineage org told me they seem to be focused on genealogy until you are a member, then it's all about service. I went to one meeting and thought it was a lot of fun, but I could see she was right. The problem is, there's a lot of work to qualify for any lineage org, and it's often not the same material that's required from one group to the next, even when it seems that would be the case. Furthermore, my family have not been ones to join such orgs, but they have been very active in government and other community activities. There's plenty of info available, but it's not already organized in a membership-ready package. At this point, I'm eligible for almost anything related to an American war, assorted "first arrival," state pioneer, and Colonial groups, and a host of European orgs. To date, I've joined only a couple of state and local gen. and hist. soc. groups and stuck with research, but it would be fun to add something a little more sociable to the mix. I'm not looking for names or recommendations, just a general feel for what experiences others have had with types of groups they've joined. I'd prefer a group to encourage others to research their own family and history, rather than any "status" associated with memberships. It's enough for me to know my ancestors were good folk. :) If you want to comment off the board, please write to web@gallifrey.org. THANKS!

Hi rottenralfny

Thanks for the reply. I'm concerned about the privacy issues of living individuals. There are those that say it's not a big deal and then others warn that you need to protect information about living individuals at all costs. I would guess that most lineage groups are quite responsible but if anybody is free to view what you submit, there is the risk of abuse.

http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/cs/standards_for_sharing_informa...

I understand the need of the society to verify your credentials but I was curious about what safeguards have been put in place to protect those applicants who submit information on living individuals from identity theft.

quoddy

Each society will have its own rules, there is no one answer fits all. Likely you will have to document everybody from yourself back. There is no point documenting people from a century ago if you haven't established the links from more recent people.

As far as looking for the town name in Russia, you can go on to Jewishgen.org and typw in the town name as you know it and it will give the the location of the town and the original name. This might be a little of help to you. My family members that are buried there are Abraham Lazarowitz and wife Miriam (maiden name Meisel) and son Hyman Lazarowtiz.

A Southern soldier in your past may give you an edge on information

There is a UDC camp nearby that is a good place to get some good long lost family information. If you have a feeling there is a Confederate veteran in your family blood get in touch with the Sons of Confederate Veterans or the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

In my family there are only 1 or 2 other people that share my passion for my family heritage. Aunt Jimmie Lou is the best but there is a lot of Texas between her and I! I belonged to many of these ancestry businesses but there was always some critical information null.
Luckily I have the DNA of a Southron soldier boy! At least seven actually. An SCV member helped me find a copy of 1 of my ancestor's Confederate enlistment paper. Great great grandfather Pvt. James K Polk Tims 37th Mississippi Infantry. He and his comrades and their families all came alive becoming a member.

The UDC udc.org & the SCV scv.org are great resources for unique and specific family information. Their sites have links to locations divided by department, state, and region. There are many contacts posted on each level.

The memberships are annually about a third less than what other genealogical memberships cost. If there is a Confederate veteran in your family blood the SCV & UDC are perfect for you to avoid general genealogy businesses. For in the South where most documents, flags, family Bibles, enlistment and unit roster copies, and photographs are preserved in family most businesses or state and national governments don't have access. For example the invading or occupying yankees in the South were led to believe that most of it was burned. In the path of Sherman's March to the Sea photographs were buried in a garden alongside other precious items. Every refugee in Vicksburg or Richmond hid what they could on them. And to protect those that served the cause the majority of Southern military records, wills, and reports were safely confined somewhere. During the surrenders of the Confederate military the majority of unit flags were saved by humble yet creative with their coats rebels.
Through their own access to countless period sources and original information the Sons of Confederate Veterans & United Daughters of the Confederacy have been the most successful bringing to life thousands of black families that had 1 or more black Confederate ancestors.

The SCV & UDC are Southern family groups honoring Southern families.
Think 800-mydixie

Most Lineage Societies will ask you to establish yourself through documentation, as a descendant qualifying for membership. These qualifying records become part of the association's library to be reviewed by others later.

Is one allowed to merely label parents and grandparents as "living" or must one trust that the association will protect one's private information?

paarade

Just type "workmen" in the society box. The result is more than 14,000 burials. My great-grandfather's brother Nathan LUTSKY is buried there.

Sharon

Joseph Andert is buried in Mount Lebanon Cemetery in NY, NY and the grave is located in the Workingmen's Circle.

Joseph was born in Rarshoff, Russia in 1888. Rarshoff does not exist anywhere - so . . .

Where can I find more informations and possibly a list of names for the Workingmen's Circle group for the time frame of 1924 and earlier?

Trying to locate his parents (Julia (Hildebrantd) and Jacob Andert) from 'Unknown Town - Germany'. Not getting anywhere with this at all.

Any other suggestions will certainly be followed up by me.

Thank You - Linda

Hi

Can anyone help me. During an online book search on google I found this book on the Anti Saloon League 1929 Yearbook
It stated that George William Sherar was International Guard does anyone know what this means?

George William Sherar was very high up in the International Order of Good Templars here in New South Wales, Australia from 1889 till 1939 and went to several big events in America and England such as the International Supreme Lodge Sessions and The Anti Saloon League Sessions he gave speeches at these events. I am in the progress of sorting through pages of information I have collected from the The Australian Temperance World Journals but it does'nt explain what International Guard means'

Can someone help??
Yes, the IOGT is still in the U.S., but I don't know how widespread it is any more. It is headquartered in Minnesota--I think in either Minneapolis of St. Paul. It has a web site. Just go to a search engine and type in "Good Templars" and it should come up.

One of the orphanages for Good Templars was in Solano County, California. We have been trying to reconstruct the orphans and half orphans that passed through there. You can see this index at http://www.rootsweb.com/~cascgsi/ under the databases . The Solano County Genealogy Society can help you if you find someone on this list.

Just noticed your recent post, and since I see you have a Philly-area phone number, I am replying because just yesterday I finally found the Philly grave of my great-grandfather in burial site affiliated with Ahaves Achim Boslover assn. I paln to call Carl Goldstein whose 215 number is listed with Montefiore cemetery as the contact for this assn. But before I do, I wonder if you know anything about this or other Boslover-linked organizations that might still have records through which I can dcover more about my g/g/father and his contemporaries, especially since I thought this ancestor came from Rovno, had made a major name-change, and died long ago--1929. Thanks so much for your assistance!

I posted the first query because I was making an article for our local genealogical society newsletter for Spring 2003. At that time I located a contact: Rev. Frederick Pyne, Registrar-General DSDI, 3137 Periwinkle Court, Adamstown, MD 21710-9649 Email: FrederickPyne@cs.com

He stated there were about 900 members then and that the fee's for applications were $40.00 which included the 1st years membership.

Mr. Pyne spoke of the society's recent publication, a series of 7 volumes, "The Genealogical Register of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Picton Press, Rockville, ME, (1997-2002) It covers from the Signers down through about 5 generations of descendants.

Mr. Pyne also stated the purpose of the Society is : "To honor the signers, help to maintain their homes and grave sites, and keep their places of work and living in memory. To encourage scholarship and provide for scholarships to persons seeking both undergraduate and graduate degrees."

To join, you will need to document your lineage from yourself to one of the Signers and you may use the above series of books.

I have had no further up-dates since the Spring of 2003. Hope this helps answer some of your questions. J. A. Childers

It is (or was) a small town about 25 - 30 kilometers north of Tulchin--which was a larger city. Is there any connection with the Boslover Beneficial Association, or does Boslover refer to some other city in Europe?

Harry Urkowitz

Also, what is the fraternal organization that has Woodsmen in the title? He appears to be wearing a medal with initials of I, F, or S, then G or C, and then T.
