Privacy issues for applicants

Most Lineage Societies will ask you to establish yourself through documentation, as a descendant qualifying for membership. These qualifying records become part of the association's library to be reviewed by others later.

Is one allowed to merely label parents and grandparents as "living" or must one trust that the association will protect one's private information?

Each society will have its own rules, there is no one answer fits all. Likely you will have to document everybody from yourself back. There is no point documenting people from a century ago if you haven't established the links from more recent people.

Hi rottenralfny

Thanks for the reply. I'm concerned about the privacy issues of living individuals. There are those that say it's not a big deal and then others warn that you need to protect information about living individuals at all costs. I would guess that most lineage groups are quite responsible but if anybody is free to view what you submit, there is the risk of abuse.

I understand the need of the society to verify your credentials but I was curious about what safeguards have been put in place to protect those applicants who submit information on living individuals from identity theft.

I know that neither the DAR or the Mayflower Society lets any one other than authorized people to see the records of living people. Basically only the applicant and the historians see it plus whoever is actually helping you put together the application.

Also the only things they require are the names and proof of birth, marriage, and (if not living) death plus connections between generations

They do NOT require SSN, address, phone number, driver's license info, credit card info or any other critical information of that type.
