Special vest for Grand Master?

My cousin just found this photo of our ancestor Harlow Waller taken in Hiawatha, KS. He apparently was a Grand Master there in the late 1800s. Does this vest have any certain significance? Thank you.

Hello,

I'm trying to trace the lineage of my husband's great grandfather who was an orphan at the Odd Fellows orphanage in Greenville. From further research, it appears a lot of the children who lived at this home were sons/daughters of Odd Fellows members.

Does anyone know where I might find an archived list of members?

Thank you!

Your request re the tille NG refers to the possition held in the order.

It is Noble Grand (Master) that can refer to a particular Lodge in the organisation.
The Oddfellows for short - are Based in Manchester though lodges are in many other parts of the world.
Your best line of reserch is via www.oddfellows.co.uk/

The society provided is mainly a friendly society where making friends and helping people is its main role. Benefits are given to members as needed and social functions are normaly subsididised by the lodge.
The other functions are the suport of charities, localy and through the societies structure they provide funding for larger research projects .n the area of medical researc where we can fund an area of research over a 3 year period.
It is not an expensive organisation to Join and both Men and woemen can join or families.

Check out the sites and if you require any further help contact me direct at demainem @btinternet .com
Hope that this helps

I am not sure as to why he left this amount of money.
We have been in contact with the Lodge in Balmain and they do not have any copies of the records.
Can anyone please suggest as to where I can go to find out if the records are still available.
It has also been discovered that the association in Sydney, New South Wales, was seperated from the International Order.
thanks for any help
Christine
Australia

I have just discovered my ggg grandparents, Benjamin Gilbert b. 1816 d. 29 April 1895 and Matilda Gilbert d. 23 January 1896, are both buried in the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Montgomery Co., PA. I have discovered that there are MANY Gilberts from Lower Merion Twp., Montgomery Co,PA. Benjamin Gilbert was born in 1816 and I and having great difficulty finding records from then. Were the Odd Fellows a large organization in that area? This falls into place with most of the Gilberts originating in England. (Thats where the Odd Fellows originated).

I only wish that there were some photos. I've got just alot of fuzzy memories. My grandfather was born on a homestead just outside what is Orting. He was quite the pioneer, his various roles in the community included, Post Master, County Commissioner of Roads, he also was the publisher of the Orting Oracle. He saw the need for a funeral home in the valley and founded the Orting Funeral Home that has been sold several times over since he sold it and retired.
On my last trip to Orting several years ago, I couldn't believe the growth. It looks so much like a suburb now rather than the "Saturday Evening Post" small town America, with the logging trains running through the center of town. Well, so much for my rambling.

Just Jim

Well, thank you. I know exactly the location you are talking about - my mother still works at the Orting Soldiers Home, and I have several family members buried at both the Orting Cemetery and the Soldiers Home Cemetery. At minimum, my family goes into Orting every year on Memorial Day as our "family holiday." The family home is still there, too, and lived in by my great-uncle.
Any possibility your grandfather may have kept photos or documents from his time in the IOOF?

I can absolutely state that it did exist. I remember seeing the IOOF Lodge Hall. I used to spend several weeks each summer as a child in Orting visiting my grandparents. The building was on the far side of the railroad tracks from the Orting Funeral Home that my grandfather owned. I can also remember asking my grandfather what was an "Odd Fellow"? I do recall that he was also a member of another lodge or organization that had a name that was the name of an animal. Maybe Lions? I do think that I asked did all the animals have lodges named after them?

I am hoping to find ANY documentation that even proves the Orting Lodge existed; but more than that, of course, I am looking for any activity on William Warner Brown, who was a member of the lodge for several years.
Thank you!
WOW! My eyes really didn't believe seeing an inquiry about IOOF of Orting, Washington. My grandfather, James R. O'Farrell was born on a homestead in Orting and was a Lodge member for many, many years. If any info about the Lodge, activities, history docs, or such I'd really love to find out more.

Here is the address and website for the Sovereign Grand Lodge:
422 Trade Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101
http://www.ioof.org

What are you hoping to find? As a general rule you need to consult lodge records (i.e., local) to find info on your ancestor. And don't forget...just because your ancestor was buried in an Odd Fellow cemetery, it does not mean that he was a member. These were community service/fundraising projects, i.e., anyone in the community could purchase a lot based on availability.

But he it is very possible that he was, I just want to make sure that you do not think presume he was because he was buried in the cemetery. At one time Odd Fellowship was larger in membership than Freemasonry, so check it out.

Do you know if there is still an Odd Fellows lodge in Tilden, NE? Is the cemetery still owned by a lodge?

Before contacting anyone, let me suggest that you go to the website and click on the link "Family Research."

Let us all know what you find!

Rev.
Before anyone will be able to help we will need to fill in a few brief details:

1. When did your grandfather live?
2. Whithorn where? Which state?
3. When you say "membership details," I presume that you mean when he was initiated and the dates of his degrees. What are those?
4. You say "I would like to know more." What would you like to know? More about Odd Fellows? More about what John Arnott did in Odd Fellows? It would help to be a little more specific.

It sounds like you have some nice items of remembrance of your grandfather's life of "friendship, love, and truth."
Cheri,

No, generally not...that number just becomes inactive. That way if there is a chance to reinstitute the lodge they can use the same number.

Also, the numbering system and names of lodges in each Grand Lodge (state) is determined by that jurisdiction. In other words, there can be fifty "Lodge #81" across the country, and Western Star Lodge can appear in every state. But there is only one "Western Star Lodge, No. 81, I.O.O.F., Augusta, Kansas." The numbering and names are not duplicated within a jurisdiction.

My suggestion is that you contact the Kansas Grand Lodge and ask if the lodge is still active. If yes, they can give you contact info for the lodge secretary. If not, they can tell you if they have the records for the defunct lodge and their procedure for researching (i.e., any cost or not), or if they are aware of an alternate source (perhaps a lodge history).

Here is the address/e-mail for the Kansas Grand Secretary:

Everett Spunaugle, Grand Secretary
Grand Lodge of Kansas, IOOF
130 West 2nd St
Frankfort KS 66427
Email: evjospun@hotmail.com

Let me know if this helps.

Rev. I can not find such a lodge listed in Augusta Kansas but did find one in Michigan. If a lodge closes down/ becomes inactive does some other lodge take that number?
