I am trying to find more about Francis Mackay (ca. 1700 -1770) He may have been a "soldier of fortune" in Hungary when his sons, Francis, Samuel and possibly Steven were born. His wife was supposedly Scottish and she was in Hungary with him.
Francis and Samuel joined the 62nd, later 60th Royal Americans, and went to Canada to serve in the war against the French. They married French women after the war ended. Francis, the son, returned to Scotland to settle his father's estate in 1770. He then rejoined the military and served in Jamaica until his death in 1790.
Any help in connecting them to their family in Scotland would be appreciated.

Not a lot here to go on. Francis is not a common Mackay name - there seems to be two possible areas for you to search. There was generations of this name born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire beginning in 1720 or I notice from the IGI there are many generations of the name in Caithness beginning from early 1700. Both these areas have links through Cyndie's lists for Scotland. Link to that from the links on Highland Hearts.
Hope this helps.

I also am searching for a Francis McKay but mine died in 1813 in Canada, possibly wounded in the war of 1812,unable to pinpoint his birth date but likely around 1740-1760, was married to a Christina when his will was written.
