Surnames: McDonald, Ferraday, Lamont, Cameron
My wife's grandparents were Alexander Sampson McDonald and Patricia Martha Ferraday. According to family history (yes, I know that's not reliable) Alexander's parents were Allan McDonald and Elizabeth Donelda Lamont. Allan's parents were Alexander McDonald and Ann Cameron and this Alexander was a son of John McDonald, Sir John A's grandfather. Alexander and Ann are said to have emigrated to Canada in 1847. I've not made any real attempt to document anything earlier than her grandfather, but I suspect this is mostly true, which means she is descended from his uncle.

According to my colleague, Bill Machin, Alexander MacDonald son of John MacDonald (1736-1822) married an Anne Campbell not an Anne Cameron. They had the following children;

Alexander born 25/03/1813 at Rovy Craig GROS 055/ 0010 0080
Donald born 31/03/1814 at Rovy Craig GROS 055/ 0010 0087
Hugh born 02/05/1817 at Rovy Craig GROS 055/ 0010 0095
John born 20/01/1821 at Rovy Craig GROS 055/ 0020 0007
William 08/11/1823 at Rovy Craig GROS 055/ 0020 0019

I have some additional information about some of the other names that you have mentioned, if you would like that. Please e-mail me at graham_macdonell@yahoo.co.uk

Cheers,

Anne's oldest brother John was the son of John MacDonald (1736-1822) by his first marriage (born 03/05/1772 - GROS 055/ 0010 0020 see Scotland's People website). Anne was his daughter by his second marriage to Jean MacDonald - no official birth record. Please contact me on w.g.machin@btinternet.com if you require more information, I have quite a lot more.

Hi Guys,

I am wondering what you think about Daniel N. Paul's claim that he is descendant of Sir John A. MacDonald and that there is whole branch of Mi'kmaw descendants of Sir John A. MacDonald.

Nora,
Myhusband's grandfather, Gordon Mott, always said that his grandmother was a first cousin of Sir John A.'s. I have always intended to verify that information. Her name was Catherine MacDonald. I just wonder if this could be the same Catherine that you mention as a sibling.

Joanne,
That is so interesting. My husband's grandfather (Gordon R. Mott) was John Calder (b.Nov 23, 1820). However, he was married to Catherine Macdonald (1814-1876). Grandpa Mott always said that his grandmother was a first cousin to Sir John A. I have never been able to verify that, and with the interest of John A.'s 200th birthday, I started looking. I have kept your information, just in case it ties in with ours.

Hi Gloria
It turns out that Nora Hockin's McDonald ancestors were from Creich Parish in Sutherland and not Rogart Parish where Sir John A's family is from. I was able to find birth/baptism records for them on the Scotlands People web site. The Catherine McDonald mentioned by Nora was born in Fload, Creich Parish in 1825 and died in 1898 in Oxford County, Ontario. It appears that she never married. Sadly, Nora passed away quite a few years ago. I am a cousin of hers.

The obituary for James McDonald posted at the beginning of this thread should read "Last Thurs. night a wedding party assembled......" not "Last night a wedding party assembled......"
An 1851 calendar shows that 5 February 1851, which was the date of the obituary, was a Wednesday. The previous Thursday, which was the date of the party and the date James McDonald died, was 30 January 1851.
The obituary was originally published Feb. 5, 1851, p. 67, N.I., British American, Woodstock.
It has been reprinted in Rev. Donald A. McKenzie, Volume 2, Death Notices From The Christian Guardian 1851-1860

It is thought that Sir John A MacDonald of Canada was related to the family of Dr John MacDonald, the Apostle of the North, If so, the surname was really MacAndie and nothing to do with the Clan Donald MacDonalds at all. It might come as a surprise to people that not all MacDonalds are connected to Somerled and his descendants but are the offspring of other, less prestigious Donalds. It's just not as the clan tartan books say, and Y-DNA testing proves that to be fact. It can easily be researched on-line.
