Honor your ancestors by becoming a member of the
First Families of Ionia County!

All you need to do is prove you are a direct descendent of your ancestor who was living in Ionia County before 1881. Application forms are available by E-mail at http://ionia.migenweb.net/ICGS/icgshome.htm
Or by writing to: Lori Fox, F.F. Correspondence Secretary
3011 Knoll Road
Portland, MI 48875

The application will have instructions and forms to fill out. It will give places to look for records to prove you are a direct descendent of your ancestor. You will need to provide evidence that your pioneer lived here. Documents such as birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, tax records, voting records and wills can show that someone resided in Ionia County. These records are considered primary evidence and newspaper articles, obituaries and published genealogies are considered secondary and will help to fill out the information. Make copies of these documents to submit with the application, along with the $15.00 processing fee. If you are not already a member of the Ionia County Genealogical Society, please include a membership fee of $15.00. Additional help is available by contacting Lori Fox who is conducting a free workshop on June 12 at 9 a.m. at the Historic Freight House in Lake Odessa.

The completed application must be received by September 1 at the following address:
Ionia County Genealogical Society
First Family Committee
P. O. Box 516
Lake Odessa, MI 48849-0516

Upon approval of your application, you will be invited to a First Families banquet held in October and you will receive your Certificate listing the names of your First Families. If you cannot attend your Certificate will be mailed to you.

We look forward to receiving your application and adding your First Family’s name to our roll of pioneers of Ionia County.
