Hi, one of my husband's great grandmothers was a member of the Eastern Star Chicago chapter. Their names were Anna Mohr Holmstrom and Anna Healy Moretti. I'd appreciate a digital copy of the picture. My email address is theredqueen2000@yahoo.com.

Thank you,
Linda Holmstrom

Dave,

Her death date of 1932 is actually listed on Ancestry, and I know from conversations with my grandmother that she was alive when my grandparents married in 1920 because she was a witness to their marriage. Also, as per my grandmother and the 1920 census, my grandfather Cady Puffer was living with Arabella in Fort Wayne in 1920 just before his marriage and after his discharge from the army. So she can not be the Arabella that who in 1914 in Ashtabula.

Sharon

Sharon,

Thanks for the information. With all the time that has lapsed since your first post I'm not surprised you have the info already. I am a little confused about the death dates of Arabella though. The discrepancy is almost 20 years. I'll have to research my info.
Thanks again for the update
Dave

Dave,

Thank you for your response. However, since my original post of May 2007, I have discovered much info on my Great Great Aunt Arabella.

Arabella did not die on the 18th of Nov 1914 in Ashtabula, Ohio. Arabella Puffer Swift died on the 30th of Oct 1932 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Her obituary can be found in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette p. 3 on the 31st of Oct 1932.

Arabella's husband, Lorenzo Swift enlisted 1 Jul 1863 in the 8th Ohio Regiment and was discharged as Sergeant on the 5th of April 1865. Arabella and Lorenzo had only one child, Cady Swift (named for Arabella's father) who was born 17 Sep 1869 and died in Ft. Wayne 21 Feb 1911 (I have a picture of Cady Swift taken when he was 8). Shortly before Cady Swift died, Arabella moved from Pulaski to Fort Wayne and was living there in 1920. In the 1930 census she was widowed and living in Fort Wayne. Living with her was my grandfather, Cady Puffer, age 30. Cady and my grandmother, Irene Mork, were married 6 months later. My grandparents settled in Fort Wayne and were close to Arabella - or Aunt Bella as they called her. Aunt Bella was the sister of George Puffer - my grandfather's father.

But thank you for your response Dave - it is good to know that someone else is interested in this line! I posted this on this message board so that anyone else (if there is anyone!) who might be interested in this line will have the info.

Sharon

Unfortunately, my father (one of the officers) wrote numbers on some of the people. Some of the people are named on the back of the photo:
Dorothy Van Wanroy, Peter Van Wanroy, Anne Terhune, Padraic Gallagher, Esther L. Johnson, Helen Peck, Bernadette Swan, Freda Stewart, Iva Hahn, Louchlan McKimmon, Grace M Neuhaus, Joseph Krol.
I'll send a digital copy of front and back to anyone who requests it.

My grandmother, Mildred Bock (nee Woodcock) was apparently a member of the Eastern Star. I would like to, if possible, learn a little bit more about her involvement, and if anyone else was in it. Mildred would have been in a/the New Jersey chapter, possibly Cliffside Park if there is one.

Also, I heard from a friend that your family had to have specific history to be in Eastern Star. Is this true? If so, what might it mean?

This is just for Michigan, not for any other parts of the country, and it's an unindexed history book, not a directory. For the most part only the state-wide officers are listed -- about 6 people per year, out of 530 chapters, with 50-800 members in each as of 1967. Do you have any idea what year she might have been a Grand Officer? I've checked the officer listings from about 1905-1948, but the closest I find is Mr. Blaine COLMAN (not COLEMAN) in 1923-1924. I could check the text for a narrower span, in case she was mentioned as holding some lesser office, but since it's not indexed I'd want to know what years I'm looking for.
As it happens, I was given some assistance in my own hunt by the webmaster of the Michigan OES Website, who happens to be named Jim COLEMAN. You can reach him through the site at www.mioes.org .

Laurel Montana/Eastern Star

I am searching for any information on the Eastern Star in Laurel Montana. My grandmother was in the Eastern Star and I am trying to get any information on her that I can. She passed away way before I was born. Her name was Genevieve Elizabeth (Anderson) Dull. I was told she was born in New York and I am wondering if any of that information would be archived with the Eastern Star?

Thank you
Paula

Clara was my great aunt and a member of the Eastern Star in Berkley, Michigan. I'm interested in locating any documents pertaining to her years in that organization. Hoping that possibly the documents she filled out at the time she applied to be a member would have other family information that would assist me in genealogical research.
I'm also interested in receiving copies of her achievements as she was a (Grand Matron ?) in the organization. If anyone can advise me on how to get this information it would be greatly appreciated.

Myrtle May WOODWARD wife of Daniel Mc DONALD both passed in mid and late 1950's buried Detroit Michigan area.
Myrtle's marker states "Order of the Eastern Star" Can anyone tell me any more on this? perhaps there's notes on her membership or details about her from these old records.
Daniel Mc DONALD, Myrtle husband's marker has a notation of "Spanish War". He was in the newspaper or publishing industry and wrote a beautiful Poem about his Myrtle May. Welcome all conversations about any of this.
Also Looking for living family links to this line to share old letter and Poem sent to my parents from Daniel in late 1950's They had a daug. Vivian Lois McDONALD b. 1900 md. Henry GOODMAN abt. 1925 in Detroit MI. and their daug was Vivian Faith GOODMAN married surname not known but lived in Chicago ILL. area with a new born son Charles Henry, as old letter gives up these clues about Daniel's Xmas visit to see his new G-grandson Charles Henry. He traveled with daug. Vivian Lois and Husband Henry GOODMAN Parents of daug. Vivian Faith and grandparents of Charles Henry; traveling via automobile.
Daniel and Myrtle's Son was named Arthur R (maybe Raymond after Myrtle's brother) b. 1902 or 04 Arthur's wife could of been Selma or Alma. They lived in Detroit area and were listed on cemetery records for contact for Myrtle and Daniel MC DONALD. Thanking in advance... May kindness be returned ten fold. Cordially, P.
Re: Great Great Grandmother Niswanger

Eastern Star can get information from other chapters, but if she lived in Hutchinson specifically, or generally in Reno County, Kansas, the chapter in Hutchinson would be the logical place to start.
Acacia and Silver Leaf chapters were the main ones active in Hutchinson. Silver Leaf absorbed Acacia, which was an older group, about 10 to 15 years ago, and they should have the records from Acacia somewhere in storage. My grandmother was associated with Eastern Star in the Acacia chapter.
If G-g-grandma Niswanger was in Eastern Star, you might also consider that she could have been associated with Rebekah Lodge or Job's Daughters, too. These groups were quite popular as a social & quasi-religious meeting place, and many women who associated with the same chapter were also many times friends in other facets of their lives.
Check the fraternal organizations in the area to see what their sister groups were called - Odd Fellows (IOOF) & others.
