Re: Thomas Kendrick/Kenwrick DAR Lookup

The patriot ancestors listed on the DAR site are those proven as to service and ancestry by at least one woman joining DAR. There were many patriots who left no descendants, and a huge number who have not had a female descendant join DAR after proving service and relationship.

DAR is a lineage membership organization. While proving service and life-path of a patriot might possibly be interesting enough to be the subject of an article deemed worthy of publication in the DAR Magazine, a patriot of interest to DAR would nearly always be one under whose record a proven female descendant submitted an application for DAR membership.

If you are a descendant of this person and wish to join DAR under his service, your first step would be to contact your nearest DAR chapter, where there should be a person assigned to assist prospective members -- and can give you details on what is required for proof of service and proof of descent from him.
Thomas Kendrick/Kenwrick DAR Lookup

I have information from the History of Harwich, Barnstable Co., MA by Josiah Paine that Thomas Kendrick was sergeant in Capt. Elijah Small's company under Col. Zenas Winslow in September, 1778 on a ship off the coast of Harwich, MA, yet I find no mention of him when I search ancestors on the DAR website. Can you tell me what that means and what are the next steps to proving him as a Rev. War Patriot?

Thanks,

Michele

Frequently the county offices will ask you to make a written request and enclosed a fee of $10-20. Frequently the county will describe their procedure on the web site for the County Clerk. Sometimes you have to telephone them to get their procedure.

Frequently after a certain date the county will turn the records over to a state Department of Vital Records.

Your chapter Registrar ought to be helping you to learn where and how to obtain the records.

Hi Thank you for your background work on this. I appreciate it. I have looked at fold 3 and there were two documents relating to Aaron Preston. Both were old letters from people asking if he served in the Revolution. As you say it is very difficult to look through online books. And that book of CT Men in the Revolution also includes those who served in the War of 1812, which Aaron Preston's son also named Aaron seems to have done. I am visiting a genealogical library in June so I hope to follow up on this ancestor. I am working on 5 or so supplemental lines which shouldn't be hard to get proof for. This is one of my more difficult ones.

Re: Aaron Preston Rev. War Service?

I had previously mentioned Johnston's book, Connecticut Men in the War of the Revolution. I managed to download a Kindle version of it and went to the index of the book. Unfortunately, there is no Aaron Preston in the Index.

Perhaps the Ancestry Microfilm has been indexed in some other service, such as Fold3. I tried one hint from the AGBI, that Aaron is in Vol 12:173 of the microfilm. Well, the 173 is not a page number where you can readily see the name Aaron Preston. I also do not have the patience to read through it sequentially.

Regarding the death in "Carolina" in 1780. One, if that means Puerto Rico, is that he was a seaman on a ship who died of an illness. His marriage record says he was "of Norwich", and Norwich is close enough to the ocean that he could have worked as a seaman.

The other theory is that Carolina refers to the states of North or South Carolina. If he had been a soldier in the Continental Army under Horatio Gates, there were numerous battles in 1780, where he could have died in battle.

I hope this helps somewhat.

It can be frustrating is the families keep using the same names over and over. I would also be cautious if the family was living in Canada after 1783, as that may mean they were Loyalists.

In order to identify a McDonald patriot, you would probably have to know where he was living in the United States. There are clusters of them in Pennsylvania, Virginia and South Carolina.

You can also search the Descendants Database, which is very useful. This can help you determine if your deceased forbear is descended from an established DAR patriot. Descendants are available who died as recently as the 1960's. The names of the living are protected, however.

The are also hard to search, but it has an alphabetical index in the last hundred pages or so.

Congratulations on the application in process. You could submit a supplemental on Aaron Preston if you find him in a reference book. He would be a new ancestor, and you would need to submit photocopies of the service evidence from the book.

Thank you for that reference. I am going to a genealogy library next month so I will see if they have it. I don't know if the DAR will be of much help since no one has claimed this ancestor before so they have no member record. But I will keep them in mind. My DAR application for another ancestor is in the works so it is probably better to wait until that has been approved.

You might try Google to locate another source, such as an electronic book. Or you could locate the book "The record of Connecticut men in the military and naval service during the War of the Revolution, 1775-1783 / edited by Henry P. Johnston" which is a standard reference book in some genealogy libraries. Or you could pay a fee to the DAR library for a search service.

Oaker Phillips Jr. is not an established Patriot. In fact, with a birth in 1765, he is a little young to have done anything during the Revolution years of 1775-1783. However, some boys as young as 13-15 might have served as a drummer.

Oaker Sr might have done some Patriotic Service such as contributing money or goods. The DAR library's GRC reports do not mention either man.

You should check some of the standard references on Massachusetts men in the Revolution at your local library or historical society. You can also consult the Registrar of a DAR chapter.

Thanks for your reply. It may be that this ancestor only served in the French & Indian War as he is connected to a record of 'overpaid soldiers' dated 1762. His officer was a Major Durkeys. However Ancestry has linked him to a Revolutionary War roll of microfilm for the Connecticut 4th Regiment commanded by John Durkee (presumably the same man) but I can not find his name on the microfilm and there are over 700 images to scroll through. I will keep searching to see if this man was a patriot. His son of the same name (not my direct ancestor) served in the War of 1812. So wars either side of the Revolution are covered. It would be nice to claim a new patriot and have him recognized if he did serve.

The Revolutionary War Roll records do not give specific birth dates or name of spouse. Some do give age at time of enlistment or draft. Extremely rare "size rolls" may give place of residence, or even occupation. If you really want to prove whether you are descended from the person listed in the database, you should go to the trouble to find the actual roster(s) mentioning him. If he was not a deserter and not courtmartialed, he would be a patriot.

You do not say why you believe your person of interest was "from" Tolland, CT, was born 22 Apr 1741, or died in 1780 in Carolina.

If this person is not in the DAR patriot database, it is because no woman applied under his service.

It is possible that the person whose listing you found is not the one with the birthdate you give, or not from Tolland, or did not marry the person you state as wife of an Aaron Preston. Or all of the above.

Since no woman has submitted a successful application as descendant of the person who you say died in 1780, DAR does not have information about death at the time you give.

DAR does not maintain a database on all patriots.
Aaron Preston from Tolland, CT (b 22 Apr 1741, d. 1780 Carolina)married to Mary Prentice has a Revolutionary War Roll record connected to him on Ancestry but I can not find him on the DAR patriot's database and no one ever seems to have claimed him for their DAR membership. The Ancestry record when opened is an extensive microfilm that has to be searched page after slow-loading page for his name and I haven't been able to go through it and actually find him. Was he a patriot? Why did he die in 'Carolina' in 1780? Why has no one ever claimed him as their ancestor for the DAR? Can you tell me anything more about him? I would really appreciate any information about this ancestor.

Hello! I am hoping to make contact with Jane Greenman MILLER who added our mutual American Revolutionary ancestor John FARRAR (1758-1853) of Massachusetts to her Daughters of the American Revolution membership. I understand that she submitted proof for all the births of the children of John FARRAR, including "my" William G. FARRAR (born 27 July 1797 at New York state). Where did this date come from? Is there an early family Bible? Did some town records survive? Hope to hear from you- THANKS!

Hello Jeff Jenkins,
I descend from Ambrose CAMERON, and wife, Mary Hannah BLACKBURN. Their daughter, Elizabeth (Cameron) SHIPLEY abt 1813-1864, (Mrs. Wm. Clayton Shipley) was my gg-grandmother. I have very little info on him and am not sure of his birth date, although I believe he was born Scotland. Would appreciate any info you have found on him.
Abigail Banks Dennison

BTW, I DO know my Elizabeth had several 20 ac. tracts in Floyd Co., Ga. that she willed to her children. I would bet these are the pension prop.

I have references to his service but have not been able to obtain sufficient evidence of birth/marriage relationships to submit John for patriot recognition with DAR. I have John and James both listed in "Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution," by Bobby Gilmer Moss, Limestone College, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1985. Do you have any documentation of relationships for Sion (1794-1857) to his father John (1755) to his grandfather James (1735)? I would appreciate any information you might have. Thanks, Adran

You can go to Baltimore and look for estate, land and court records, or hire a researcher to do so for you. One place to look for a possible researcher is the website of the Association of Professional Genealogists. The MD Historical Society or a local genealogical society may also have lists of available researchers.

Baltimore city and County land records have been posted on the internet at www.mdlandrec.net. To utilize the site you must register (free) - they will send you a password.

Since your application must go through a particular existing DAR chapter, have you sought help from the person in such a chapter who is assigned to help applicants with their applications?
I am just starting research on Thomas Lounder, Marlene. How do you know his middle name and his death date? Why do you say Elinor/Eleanor was born in Ireland? Her pension application says that Thomas was 22 years older than she was when they married in 1798 in the parish of Kingston, and she was 64 years of age when she signed the application in January 1846.
Have you found any likely origin for Thomas yet? C'mon, Marlene, you've had nine years. :)
-- Best, Deacon

The obit is good proof of death but obits can contain errors...usually DAR requires a birth, marriage and death certificate as proof where one is available (usually the most recent generations). I'd obtain a copy of the death certificate from the state of NJ which would be the primary proof.

What if you sent for the death certificate and found it disagreed with the obit? It wouldn't be the first time...so obtain the DC.

Joan

I'm working on collecting proof for my application, and I'm not sure if this counts:

When my great-grandmother died 10 years ago, we saved the obituary but never thought to save the header/front page of the newspaper. Now that I'm applying to the DAR, I can't use it, right?

I just found it on the newspaper's web archive, but I'm not sure if this is sufficient either:
http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/courierpostonline/obituary....

So I'm looking for advice.
