I looked in the NSDAR Patriot Index and did not locate an Elisha Towne That doesnt mean he didnt fight, it means that no one has joined the NSDAR Membership using his lineage.

Did you see if he is listed in the 1840 census? If so, check on the back side of his listing (the second page) and see if he checked he was a revolutionary patriot. Its also possible that his wife (last one) might have claimed a pension if he did serve as well as his children could claim.
