What documents does DAR have?

Surnames: Crequi, Creque, Nelson
There is a Peter M. Creque listed at the DAR. Served as Lt. MA. He was not pensioned, nor were his heirs; however, there is a spouse, Elizabeth Nelson, shown. Does the DAR have records detailing how the name of his wife was obtained? I question that she waa his wife. Could she have been a relative or descendant hoping to receive benefits? Would there be others names on the DAR record?

Actual DAR lookup result reads:
CREQUE, Peter M.
Birth: CT 3 Apr 1740
Service: MA
Rank: LT
Death: NY 3 Sep 1821
Patriot Pensioned: No Widow Pensioned: No
Children Pensioned: No Heirs Pensioned: No
Spouse: (1) Elizabeth Nelson

Any leads to obtaining the documentaion will be appreciated.

Thank you for the inquiry.
It has been a long time since anyone joined DAR thru Peter CREQUE. DAR has a notice on this Patriot FUTURE APPLICANTS MUST PROVE CORRECT LINEAGE.

The only way to know what proof was listed on this ancestor is to request the latest set of papers. To order a copy of the latest DAR papers, make a check payable to TREASURER GENERAL, NSDAR in the amount of $10.00 and a cover letter. List the name of the Patriot and thru the child that you descend and a list of any generations.

Thank you for your prompt and informative reply. Unfortunately, I have no idea if I'm related to Peter Creque but think if I could find names of people who've joined the DAR on his record I might be able to determine exactly who he was. Is it possible to obtain the names and lineage of those who've applied? Also, your note that his file has a notice that future applicants must prove correct lineage - does that mean some applicants did not prove their lineage?

I am tracing a Creque/Crequi family that settled in the West Indies around 1700 and suspect he is part of that clan. His DAR lookup record shows only a middle intial "M" but on his service records he is identified as Peter Markoe Creque/Creque - in which case he is part of the West Indian group.

So, I don't know exactly how I should word my request to the DAR - nor do I know how many applicants there were.

Hi, I do not have access to the papers; only an online index. However, I can tell you that if Peter's middle name was documented it would have appeared in the entry. Only an M is shown so that is all the applicant documented. I do not have access to the names of members. Only 3 people have joined through Peter and all 3 joined through a son John married to Catherine Updike. Apparently there is an error in the lineage. The reference for the error says:

LINE IN ERROR N.Y. BUCKE ROCKS V6 BP 5-18-54

It is not clear to me what that means. It looks like a reference to a book. All sources are given on a paper so seeing the paper might clear up some of your questions.

Best of luck with your research.
Jenny

Jenny -

Thank you. The John Creque/Catherine Updike info narrows my search quite a bit. Can't find anything re the error but will keep trying.
