Convent/orphanage in Columbus, Ohio

My grandmother's parents died while she was young. Her father in 1917, when she was 4, & her mother in 1927, when she was 14. She, & her sister, were taken to a convent/orphanage in Columbus to live until they were grown up.
Nobody in my family knows what the name was of the convent but my mother seems to think that it was on High St. or Broad St.
My grandmother's name was Florence Rozella Katzenmeyer but she was given the name "Margaret" while she was in the convent. For the rest of her life she was known as "Peg". Her sister's name was Dolly Bernice Katzenmeyer.
If anyone can help me on what the name of the convent was or if they have any information on it, or my grandmother, I would deeply appreciate it!
Thanks!

Hello,
I don't know if this is helpful to you or not but my father grew up in a Catholic orphanage in Columbus called St. Vincent's Orphanage. I don't know if it's there anymore but it could be a starting place for you.

Thanks so much for your help. St. Vincent's wasn't the right orphanage but your reply DID make me start looking again & I think that I hit the jackpot! I needed to find an orphanage/convent located on West Broad St. & I just found Good Shepherd Convent.
I found a picture of it & showed my Mom & she thinks that she recognizes it from when she & my Grandma would go to Columbus & visit relatives. She also thinks that she remembers the name "Good Shepherd" from Grandma's diploma & school picture.
Again, thanks! You helped me to get back on track!

Your message seems to be almost identical to mine - my mother passed away recently and she was also at the Good Shepard Convent Orphange. We are trying to locate any information on it. Have you been successful or do you have any leads to share? Would be more than happy to let you know any information that we find. Thanks

Hi. No, I haven't found out anything more about it although I have found a couple of pictures of it.
Unfortunately my grandmother, Aunt Dolly, & her other siblings who didn't go to the orphanage (they were older) are long dead so we really don't have any family to go to for clues.
This entire branch of Grandma's family (Katzenmeyer) has been HARD to track down! Grandma's parents (John Clayton Katzenmeyer & Charlotte Bishop Katzenmeyer Jaeger) both died so young that the chain of information that normally filters down through the generations has been kind of disrupted.
If you happen to find out anything more on Good Shepherd, give me a shout.
Good Luck.

Thanks for your response - a couple questions? Did you find out where it used to be (address?) when did it close? have you contacted the Catholic Church in Columbus? Where did you find the pictures?

My sister who lives in Columbus is really actively trying to find information - my mother (who passed last month) was an orphan there for a period of time around 1930. Putting together a family history is proving difficult, my mother was born in the mountains of KY and records are scarce. We do know from her stories that there was some sort of abuse at the orphange - and she ran away was caught and moved to another location by a judge. She really would never talk too much about the incident for obvious reasons but we feel the records from the location might get us in the right direction - looking forward to hearing from you soon and again thank you.

Good Shepherd Convent was located on West Broad St, on land that Graham Ford is located today.
The convent was originally the homestead of Lucas Sullivant. The founder of Franklinton.
If you go into the dealership you can see a stair case from the original building that was preserved.
It is in the center rear of the showroom.
I believe that the records from Good Shepherd were moved to The Rosemont Center also in Columbus.
I was a child attending Holy Family School when they tore down the convent and built the car dealership.
I recall watching the workers from the school playground.
I know that there was also a cemetery and the had to move bodies before preceding.
The Good Shepherd was also a home for girls.
There is a catholic museum in the old Holy Family High School. Fr Lutz at Holy Family may be able to offer some info on the convent.
I am also a trustee for Franklinton Historical Society and I know for one of our meetings we had some one give a presentation on the Good Shepherd Convent.
Another source of information might be the librarian of the Frankinton Branch library, named Brenda Dutton.
The library is located at 1061 West Town St. in Franklinton.

Hope this helps.

I have a similiar problem of cousins being sent to an orphanage in Columbus from Lancaster, Ohio. Severql years ago I tried St. Vincent's Orphange records but was not allowed to see them. St. Vincent's was on East Main Street in Columbus. Wonder where those records are now.

I saw your posting and wondered if you had checked cemetery records at Mt. Calvary Cemetery for your German family? The Catholic Cemetery Association (at the Columbus diocese website) can be very helpful. Half of Mt. Calvary are the Germans from Holy Cross parish. You might also want to check Greenlawn Cemetery near German Village. Although not Catholic, it might be of some help.
