Hi Lee! It has been awhile! Hope you are doing good. I would love to have the pdf file about the trouble of our ancestors. By the way, I have done the Ancestry DNA just recently. I am still going thru the list of matching trees. I have found some Hereford/Harford and Hafford matches. It's been alot of fun. Thank you so much for doing this. My email is: snuffridge@att.net
Mary

Actually, I think you are referring to Franka. Although she waS living with Amanda and Richard in 1870, and was listed as 9 years old, subsequently she did go to live with other relatives (probably in Kentucky).

I can look at your file at Ancestry.com. I have a Family Finder (autosomal DNA) match with a Dickerson family in
Georgia so will look in your file for a link to the Dickerson's and related families in KY & Indiana.

If you send your email to owl@mcn.org I'll invite you to my Ancestry file. I've updated the Dickerson's but would like more information.

I read recently that the youngest son of BJ and Martha Schooling had been living with a man who had adopted him after his parents died and then they went back to KY where he grew up.

By the way, I'm always curious how we are related. I have about 900 Springate's, Dickerson's, etc., listed in my files. I'm the son of Richard Cleland Springgate, d. 1962, and my great-great grandmother was Amanda Dickerson. My grandfather used to tell me about her, as she was the historian in the family. One of the Watts-Hays letters refers to her as Cousin Mandy. B.J. was her brother, one of six children born between 1811 and 1820.

I didn't chase down Franka, but there is some more information out there. Perhaps a grave site? You can get the census report from Ancestry for 1870; just look for the Springgate's in El Paso, Woodford County, Illinois.

I have a file with Ancestry under Spring(g)ate's of KY. I'm not currently enrolled, although I hope to correct that soon, so I don't know if I can issue invitations. They just jumped their monthly price by $5.00 for the International records.

I have the records for the Dickerson's going back to Thomas and Susannah Dickerson in the late 1600's. Others have tried to link them to Dickensons (which they then carry back to English royalty) but the change in names (not uncommon) and the dates are problematical.

Hi, I took the tavern keeper information from an article about BJ's death. It also reported that he was the marshal of Franklin. I checked the footnotes at the Watts Hays Letters (www.wattshaysletters.com) but did not put in the article. Look at Letters 52 and 55 in the Civil War Section. I received some information from a post at The Civil War in Indiana site.

Franka was my 2nd cousin 3xR. I'd like to put more information about Franka in my file - who she married, her children and where she lived. Do you have an online file?

B.J. was born in Mercer County, KY. He was one of six children. As far as I know, he was never a tavern keeper. In 1863 he was a sheriff, and was gunned down while escorting a prisoner. One daughter, Franka, went to live with his sister, Amanda Dickerson Springgate, in El Paso, Il, and was listed in the 1870 Census as part of the family (listed as a 9 year old son, but actually a girl).

Amanda is my great-great grandmother.

I'm related to the Leathers who changed their name to Palmer. One theory of the name change is that some Leathers were "gypsies" who engaged in theft, among other crimes. See an article by poet John Greenleaf Whittier which mentions them (http://www.wordiq.com/books/Yankee_Gypsies/8).

I've been unable to find out what the last straw was that caused so many to change their names. It may be in the state archives in Concord; name changes were handled by the state legislature. Maybe someone closer to NH than me (I'm in Florida) can find out for us.

See http://genforum.genealogy.com/hanscom/messages/313.html for a theory, though even fratricide doesn't seem to me to be reason for so many people to hide their family ties (doesn't everyone in a small town know everyone else, regardless of name?) Unless they were Quakers, which is highly doubtful.

Did you ever find Theodore?

In the late 1920's an unknown SCHUMACHER fathered a child in Prince Georges Co., MD, a suburb of DC. Following is the only information we have. The child's mother stated that SCHUMACHER was a musician and spent time in jail. Following is the only information we have found.

In the 1930 Census for Hyattsville, Prince Georges Co., Maryland, at 2 Goodman Avenue, Ernest POORE appears as the head of household, rents his home for $20 per month, and does not live on a farm. He is 23 years old, and married at age 22. He did not attend school since 1 September 1929 and can read and write. He and his parents were born in DC, and he speaks English. His occupation is shipping clerk at a warehouse company. The other occupants of the household are Virginia POORE, wife, 23 years old, married at 23, did not attend school in 1929, can read and write, born in Arkansas, parents born in Arkansas, speaks English and has no occupation; SCHUMACHER, Virginia, stepdaughter, 2 years old, single, did not attend school in 1929, born in Maryland, father born in Missouri, mother born in Arkansas. (The family knows Virginia SCHUMACHER as Helen Juanita POORE.)

Elaine,

The email address didn't work, so hopefully you'll respond to this post.

My name is Don Johnson, and I am a descendant of Parmer Ensign Buck, he was my great-grandfather. My grandmother was Persis Ethylene Buck. I've been trying to trace my roots. My grand-mother married Charles Franklin Mead, and I've been able to trace his family all the back to William Mead who came from England in 1635. However, the Buck family has been hard to trace. I'm hoping you have gathered further information.

knightsbbs@comcast.net

Bart Thrasher was not related to me. He is just an colorful character that my dad often mentioned when he told stories about growing up in West Blocton, Alabama. These stories had to do with Bart being an infamous "desperado" who was active in Bibb County, Alabama. One of those stories was that Bart Thrasher and his gang (as it was told to me) one day found my uncle, who was a young boy at the time, playing on a bridge across a creek, when Bart came along and threw him into the creek. My uncle said he did not know how to swim, but he learned how to that day! Interestingly, my uncle who was thrown into the creek was Julius Israel, who later became the father of Mel Allen (Israel), the famous baseball announcer for the New York Yankees.

Bill 1/3/11

Both Walter and Effie are supposed to have been from around the Leathers city area and I am having trouble finding information on Effie's parents. Any information that you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

They relocated to Turner Maine.

If anyone has a History of Barrington or other Vital Records book, I'd appreciate a lookup on her and her family. They didn't have a clue who the people were and weren't really interested in just loose clippings.

I did receive some inquiries about them from posting on the boards. They were family members who replied and I sent them a copy. Now I have them on Flickr where, hopefully, they'll get more exposure.

forgot to answer, no I am in Wa state but was born in Canton, Ohio. Lived there a whole 9 months in 1948 when parents moved us to California.
I found out my dad had been incarcerated in a group that is now defunct that was on MSN where the owners were in Guernsey County and searched old papers. Once I saw he had been busted for larceny with a friend I followed up from there getting his prison records. I also found his father-in-law was busted as well but unlike my dad, his FIL was well respected in the community but fell on hard times when his asthma caused him not able to work to support his large family.
My archives on this PC (abt 2 gig now)are digital and then I also have a section of resources to check as well. Some are online, some only by snail mail.
Hi Julia (Baaabaaaaa)
I never search a particular newspaper-just because a particular paper is not avail doesn't mean items were not printed in other papers/other towns etc.
I ONLY search name, year span and state. Like with paper names, I never pinpoint a city either. Remember too that in older times news was not only printed locally but in a person's home town or any town they lived at any appreciable amount of time. Back then news/gossip traveled fast to one's root areas.
If you'd like me to look around send me the data to circa_1948@hotmail.com
sunny sheep IBSSG

At the least, you could assemble them into a album/scapbook (no glue or tape!) and give them to the local genealogical/historical society. It'll be known as the Cathy Sisson Album, thereby making you an official White Sheep.

.^_^.
