The Beverly James Dickerson in my tree, b. abt 1820 was the son on Beverly James Dickerson and Nancy Jane Watts. Probably born in KY, he lived with his family in Washington Co., KY until before 1860 then became a tavern keeper in Jefferson Co., KY (see 1860 census). He died in about 1863 in Illinois, killed probably because he was a rebel. His wife was Martha and he had numerous children, some of which may have gone to Howard Co., MO. I'm interested in sharing information on the Dickersons.

B.J. was born in Mercer County, KY. He was one of six children. As far as I know, he was never a tavern keeper. In 1863 he was a sheriff, and was gunned down while escorting a prisoner. One daughter, Franka, went to live with his sister, Amanda Dickerson Springgate, in El Paso, Il, and was listed in the 1870 Census as part of the family (listed as a 9 year old son, but actually a girl).
Amanda is my great-great grandmother.

Hi, I took the tavern keeper information from an article about BJ's death. It also reported that he was the marshal of Franklin. I checked the footnotes at the Watts Hays Letters ( www.wattshaysletters.com) but did not put in the article. Look at Letters 52 and 55 in the Civil War Section. I received some information from a post at The Civil War in Indiana site. Franka was my 2nd cousin 3xR. I'd like to put more information about Franka in my file - who she married, her children and where she lived. Do you have an online file?

I didn't chase down Franka, but there is some more information out there. Perhaps a grave site? You can get the census report from Ancestry for 1870; just look for the Springgate's in El Paso, Woodford County, Illinois.
I have a file with Ancestry under Spring(g)ate's of KY. I'm not currently enrolled, although I hope to correct that soon, so I don't know if I can issue invitations. They just jumped their monthly price by $5.00 for the International records.
I have the records for the Dickerson's going back to Thomas and Susannah Dickerson in the late 1600's. Others have tried to link them to Dickensons (which they then carry back to English royalty) but the change in names (not uncommon) and the dates are problematical.

By the way, I'm always curious how we are related. I have about 900 Springate's, Dickerson's, etc., listed in my files. I'm the son of Richard Cleland Springgate, d. 1962, and my great-great grandmother was Amanda Dickerson. My grandfather used to tell me about her, as she was the historian in the family. One of the Watts-Hays letters refers to her as Cousin Mandy. B.J. was her brother, one of six children born between 1811 and 1820.

I can look at your file at Ancestry.com. I have a Family Finder (autosomal DNA) match with a Dickerson family in Georgia so will look in your file for a link to the Dickerson's and related families in KY & Indiana. If you send your email to owl@mcn.org I'll invite you to my Ancestry file. I've updated the Dickerson's but would like more information. I read recently that the youngest son of BJ and Martha Schooling had been living with a man who had adopted him after his parents died and then they went back to KY where he grew up.

Actually, I think you are referring to Franka. Although she waS living with Amanda and Richard in 1870, and was listed as 9 years old, subsequently she did go to live with other relatives (probably in Kentucky).

It's interesting how many Beverley James and James Beverley's there are in the family tree. Amanda named her youngest son James Beverley.
