Surnames: Cruce, Laneer
John Pharris Cruce,( my gg-grandfather)
John Cruce was an officer in the KKK somewhere in Alabama in the late 1870's. After the war during Reconstuction the Law men were all Yankee's and the local sheriff framed John Cruce for the murder of a woman that John and his family knew. In the shoot-out John killed the deputy and escaped. The Alabama KKK got the word out to other members of the KKK in other states and John was furnished places to stay and fresh horse's through the states of Alabama, Mississippi,Arkansas and into the OK.Indian Ter.

He soon moved back into western Ark. changed his name to John Laneer and sent for his wife and children,mother-inlaw and a negro lady who was a nanny. They took a train to Johnson County Ark. His wife was Nancy Green and her mother was Bensia Ann Green, father was Shadrack L. Green.

In 1975 one of the Laneer decendants who lived out in Colorado stopped here in Johnson County to speak with my grandfather Joseph Stallings who remembered his grandfather John (Cruce)Laneer well. The man had a copy of the Wanted poster for John Cruce but he didn't leave us with a copy and I have no way of knowing where to search for a copy. Could anyone out there help me out in showing me how to go about finding a copy for myself?

PS John was never caught and died a free man in 1913.

Please e-mail me direct if you can and thankyou very very much.

My father was John Laneer who retired back to Johnson County in 1970 where he lived until his death in 1983. We have heard pieces of the Cruce story all my life, and I am very excited to find this Alabama story. My grandfather was William Green Laneer. The relative from Denver must have been my Uncle Bob (Robert Green Laneer) who died some time ago. He grew up in Johnson County, but lived in Colorado during the 60's. He moved back to my grandparents
home on the Old Wire Road probably in the 70's. As for the poster, I've never heard of that, but his son lives somewhere near Denver now. I would be delighted to hear anything about this. Thanks

Neal, I am also related to the Laneer's. John Cruce Laneer was my gg-grandfather. I have just learned about him over the past year. If you have any info to share, I would be delighted. I am very interested in this story. Donna Gentry

Thank you for this invaluable information on the mystery of the Laneer/Lanier family name. I am also a great grandchild of John Pharris Laneer and Nancy Green. My dad, George Lanier, now deceased, was very young when both of his parents died, and he never knew our original name. My grandfather was John Henry Lanier born in Macon GA in 1876
Thanks to this information I have found the book, An Outline of Cruces by P.J.Montgomery and I look forward to reading it.
Any other information on this family would be appreciated.
