Seeking info on my gggrandfather who was born in either NC or Tn in 1850. No known history in Ireland other than the Daugherty name was and is big in Donegal. No immigration records since his father was a stowaway. Believed to embarked in the Carolinas as he apparently took up with an Indian tribe. His son John Jackson married Rebecca Cherry who was 1/2 Indian blood. Not much to go on, but I have to start somewhere.
Thanks for any help!!!!

Surnames: Coakley, Griffin
Looking for a tie in my family with the names Coakley and Griffin. My gggrandfather was Newton Cokley (sometimes Coakley) Griffin b.1832 Tnn. His father was Isaac Wilson Griffin b.about 1800 in Tnn. or S.C.
We have always been told that we Griffin's were from County Cork. Always wondered where the name Coakley came from. No one seems to know. Have you ever heard of any Griffin and Coakley names together, as in a marriage or living in same area in U.S. or Ireland? Anything is appreciated.

Keohane link to Hurley or GeoM

Interested in original query. Where is the connection between Keohane and the Hurley surname which is listed in description, but not in the message? Any connection to RI-born entertainer George M Cohan?

My grandmother, Margaret Mahoney(1879 Co Cork-1955WI), said she was George M's cousin, but we don't know how. Some of her siblings were born in Inchigeelagh, Co. Cork, and some in the Glengarriff Registration District, maybe Bantry. Her parents were Cornelius and Margaret(Regan)Mahoney. Family emigrated in 1880's to northern IL, where they lived with or near Hurley or Cronin relatives, got RR jobs, then moved to WI.

Her grandparents (who probably d in IRE) were James and Kate/Catherine(Hurley) Mahoney and Daniel?(not positive) and Mary(Scott) Regan. Cornelius Mahoney had a brother, John, who apparently emigrated to Philadelphia, where one of his descendants married an O'Connell. Another descendant of John's may qualify for the Black Sheep Society.

Willing to exchange information. Thanks for any advice.

After reading the message above, I noticed the Hurley listed above was from Inchigeelagh in County Cork. My Grandmother was a Hurley but was from Dunmanway in County Cork which is about 15 miles from Inchigeelagh and she married an O'Leary from Inchigeelagh. You might try Dunmanway for the Hurley clan as well. Grammie arrived in the USA through Ellis Island some time in the 1890's as did my Grandfather and both settled in the Boston area where they met and married. Both were deceased in 1954. I do not know if the Catherine Hurley you speak was my Grandmothers sister (She had one named Catherine who my Mother was named)since no one really kept records and most of the knowledgable people to ask this questions of have long been deceased. Most of the clans stayed in one area and didn't go very far from their home in Ireland. My grandparents grew up 15 miles apart and never met until coming to the USA. Good luck on your search. I haven't started researching the Hurley side of my family tree yet.

Hello, 1/July/2006
I can't read all these references to Hurleys, Keohanes and O'Learys without making a comment.
My parents both came from Glengarriff, Co. Cork to London. My mother's name was Hurley. Her father's paternal grandmother's maiden name was O'Leary and his maternal grandmother's maiden name was Keohane.
They were all from around the Glengarriff/Bantry area.
Any connections?
Regards Michael O'Shea
