I am researching the family of Thomas HANKS and Harriet MITCHELL who lived in a residence in Newcastle Street, East Maitland for many generations. Thomas was a bootmaker and arrived in Sydney with his mother, Phoebe, brother James and two sisters, Mary and Eliza in September 1839. Not long after that he settled in Maitland where he married Harriet in January 1850. They only had one child, Thomas Charles who was born in March 1856. Thomas married Emma TACON in Maitland in March 1880. They had a large family including Harriet May, Lucy Agnes, Florence Amy, Huntley Adell, Cyril, Raymond Thomas, Frederick Trevellyn and William Ralph.
Family legend has it that Phoebe HANKS died in Maitland in August 1852 but I have been unable to find a death registration for her. Does anyone have access to local MI transcriptions that might be able to assist me in my search for her grave? Any help gratefully appreciated.

Re: HANKS Family of Maitland
There is a death registered in 1853 for a Phoebe Hanks, daughter of James & Mary - BDM: V1853934 42A/1853.
Could this be her?

Re: HANKS Family of Maitland
Ooops!! I had been looking up Births and forgot to change search field to Deaths.
So that BDM registration is actually a birth, and not a death.
My sincere apologies.

Re: HANKS Family of Maitland
Hi Barbara,
As you discovered this is a birth registration. It is the grand-daughter of the Phoebe whose death I am searching for. Thank you for your interest and help.
Regards,
Melanie

Re: HANKS Family of Maitland
Dear Melanie, I found your message when I was looking for Tacon links on the internet. I have traced the family back to the late 1600's in Suffolk. Emma Tacon as born in Wollombi in 1861 to William Tacon and Lucy Blackwell and married Thomas Hanks in Branxton. William Tacon came free to Australia on the America in 1853. I am decended from William Tacon who was Emma's younger brother. Please contact me if you would like any other information. Regards, Sue Crisp

Re: HANKS Family of Maitland
Melanie & others I hope you are still active on rootsweb. I have come across your correspondence in my research of the MITCHELL family which is that of the Harriet (1825-1901) who married Thomas HANKS (ca 1821-1901) in NSW in 1850. My connection is through a descendant of her brother, Henry (1841-1916) whose grand-daughter, Agnes Elizabeth MITCHELL (1901-1972) married Bernard FARRELL (1897-1969) in Casino in 1922. Do you have any knowledge of the MITCHELL family in Kent, England? Kevin
