Peter, I have a brother of my great grandmother living or working in High Street, Maitland until 1884. Joshua Anderson. I know he came from Ireland, and his parents were Samuel and Elizabeth. He had brothers Samuel, George, William, David, and sister Hannah (Baker) living in Australia, as well as brother Francis in Glasgow and sister Rebecca in Canada. Any further information would be greatly appreciated. Regards Jess

I am looking for info about the Bromhead families that had businesses on High Street. They would be Joseph or John Bromhead, father and son, who came to Australia in 1848 on the ship Agincourt with their families. They were lacemakers in England and France and came to Australia as assisted migrants.

Hi Stephen,
I have a J. Bromhead mentioned in High Street Miatland in 1850 occupation hairdresser. Also listed in Greville's 1872 directory as a hairdresser High St Maitland.
A Joseph Bromhead rented a small portion of land in High Street in 1870, at the area known then as the embankment, corresponding to where the Hunter River used to run beside High Street prior to 1913 flood. This is on northern side of High Street, eastern end, roughly opposite the Currency Lass Hotel which still operates. The source for this is the 1870 rates book, held by Maitland City Library.
According to 1901 Census, J Bromhead kept a store 2 doors west of the maitland Town Hall.
According to 1924 rates a William S Bromhead, High Street, Maitland , occupation "CPS"?
Try Lindsay Watts 65 Britania St Umina NSW 2257 - appears to be a descendant

Hello, Peter In my search for info on the Watson family, I heard from Max Paterson. His parents had a cafe/milk bar in the High Street, where they sold Watsons Cordials.

I'm researching John Tierney who was a tailor on High Street Maitland. He arrived in Australia around 1833 and married Catherine Kelly in 1838. I'm descended through their daughter Mary Elizabeth.
I apologise if I've been in touch with you previously Peter and requested this information. I did contact someone a few years ago but the emails with all the information were lost on an old computer.
