I also have a Sennet violin. It was made in 1920 and the number is 129. It was given to me in pieces and I Put it. Ack together and play it now and then. I would like to get it restored but have no idea where to take it. Does any one have any idea what they are worth? I'm never going to part with it but would like to know an approximate value

Hello, my name is Kip Culberson, from Fort Worth, TX. I am SO GLAD to FINALLY see ANYTHING online with the name "Marsh-Marley Music Co." in the posts. The reason for this, is that just a couple of weeks ago, I went to an estate sale that was located in a neighborhood around the historic district of downtown ftw....always love those sales in that area due to amazing finds, sometimes!! In this particular estate sale, the gentlemanthat passed on was a rare drum collector. He actually had an authentic, with markings, Civil War marching drum, which sold for around $1000+. In the backyard, I found a few vintage/antique snare drums & accesories that i quickly bought without even looking at it thoroughly, due to the low cost. When i got home, i realized that i had 3 complete, working snare drums...with all original hardware!! 2 were big names id heard of, but the most unique one of them all has only one identifying black, oval-shaped label on the inner shell that says: "MARSH-MARLEY MUSIC CO. DALLAS, TEXAS", in the middle of label...and around the top of the same label in smaller lettering, it says, "MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, SUPPLIES, ETC."...and around bottom of label, "ARTISTIC REPAIRING and PLATING." I know this thread is about violins/fiddles, but can ANYONE help me find out some info about this drum?? anything would be appreciated. u can reply to my email if ud like, as well at kculberson21@yahoo.com. thx!!

I have Sennet's number 161 made in 1920. Found it in an antique store in very bad condition. I had it professionally restored. Sounds great. There are bound to be more of his examples here in the Dallas area in attics, etc. Hope most of them find good homes someday.

Grateful thanks for the information on FA Sennet. I own his violin # 178, made in 1912, play it every day, perform on it all the time and call it Dallas! It's a lovely, dark-toned, beloved instrument, and I've always wanted to know more about the maker. Not much comes up on line. Please include me in any information you're willing to share. My ambition is to go to Dallas one of these days and do some research of local papers, but so far, I've not had that chance. Many thanks, Cosi Long

Hello Bob,
I saw your reply to this post regarding Sennett violins. My great grandfather bought one from Mr. Sennett in 1913 in Dallas. I am a fiddler and now have and play that violin. I would really appreciate it if you would contact me so that I can get some more information on him.
Thank you so much.
I only have a basic membership and can't seem to message you through ancestry.com.
Heather, I can fill you in on the maker of your Sennet violin along with his family. He was my GrGrGranduncle. Born in Funkenhagen, pommern, Prussia in 1863, immigrated to Chicago with his parents in 1867, began a violin/mandoline company in Chicago before moving to Dallas in 1903. His son Walter was a talented violinist and music professor. Took a job in LA with the California Music Conservatory. Frank his father and mother Helen and sister Eleanore along with her husband relocated from Dallas to LA in 1922. F.A. Sennet died in 1931 in LA. Contact me for more info on Frank's family. According to the Book of American Violinemakers, F.A. Sennet finished about 450 violins and his labels on those violins were hand written. I have been researching his Sennet branch for about 20 years.

Bob

Heather,

I own the sister violin to the one that you described in you post. The maker's name is F.A. Sennet. My label reads:
F.A. Sennet
Made for Marsh.Marley
Dallas, Texas 1919
#116

I've owned this violin for about a year and have not found anything about Marsh.Marley. Sennet made a lot of fiddles and you'll find them scattered around here and there. I realize that you posted this 5 years ago, but if you happened to get this post email me at, graywolflmr@yahoo.com

I emailed you at the address you listed.

Hi everyone,
I'm new here so please bear with me.
Francois Pique is my Great Great Great Great Great (phew!!) Grandfather. It seems that he was quite an influential violin maker in France in the late 1700's. He started at Mirecourt and then moved to Paris, he worked closely with Lupot and was reputed to be the second finest violin maker of that period. Despite all this I can find very little indepth information about him. I would love to know more about his family history as well as his work. I've found pictures of his violins on the web, but not much else. Are there any good reference books on French violin makers of this period, or articles I could access? Are there any other relatives looking for the same information?
It would be great to hear from anyone that could help me.
Thankyou all for your time,
Lisa Carter
This message board does not seem to get much notice, how unfortunate. I knew Mr. Erickson personally, he was a close friend in his later years. Originally from Sweden, he apprenticed as a cabinet maker and moved into violins. He lived in Cedar Lake, Indiana. In the early part of his career, he worked for George Einsley making violins at the Perfection Musical String Company in Brunswick, Indiana. A small settlement west of Cedar Lake. He then opened up a shop on Hohman Avenue in downtown Hammond, Indiana where he made his high quality branded instruments with the Erickson name encircled on the back of the scroll. When he retired, (mid '60's or so-I believe, he still maintained a small shop in Brunswick around the corner from the Perfection String Company shop.
I first met him in the early '70's. My grandmother (also from Cedar Lake) gave me an old violin that was in her attic for years with the explanation that it was purchased from George Einsley's Perfection String Company shop in the mid 1930's. I took it to Mr. Erickson to have it restrung and to purchase a bow. Mr. Erickson explained that it was one of his early violins he had made while in the Employ of George Einsley which is why it didn't have his signature Erickson name stamp on the back of the scroll. That came later when he went out on his own and opened his shop. After seeing my instrument and listening to me relate my story of how I acquired it, he behaved like it was a lost sheep returning home. Upon learning that I was interested in classical music, he invited me to his shop and his home many times wher I learned much about the mechanics of the violin. He became quite ill and passed in the mid '70's. I also took violin lessons from his daughter Dorothy (also from Cedar Lake) for several years before going to college to study music. When I read your email, I further inspected the label and sure enough it was FECIT ANNO 1927. The "7" was slightly faded, however, it was clearly a 7. He must have made this violin during in his early years in Hammond - as you indicated he opened his shop in 1926.
Thank you
Jeff
Malin:
I want to thank you for responding to my email. After my request, we were in the process of building a new home and then ultimately relocating. This particular violin was made in 1927 and it is a beautiful tigar maple. Its been in our family for over thirty years. My father purcahsed it from a member of the RI Philharmonic for me when I was in third grade. We polished it and played it today and it is certainly a fine instrument. We plan on having it in our family for years to come. Thanks again and I greatly appreciate you detailed response.

Regards,
Jeff

Stephanie
I want to thank you for responsding to my request some time ago about John Ericson. What a intersting story about your great, great uncle. Several people over the last several years have resonded to my request. Can you see the responses as well? If not, I can forward to you since there is a substantial amount of history on John. This violin has been in my family for over thirty years. My parents purchased this violin from a member of the RI Philharmonic Orchestra when I was in third grade. My oldest son is intersted in playing so it sparked my interst since I haven't played for some time. I cleaned and polished (as well as played, although not like the old days). This particular violin was build in 1927 and it a beautiful tigar maple. In any event, if you ever had a picture or some other info on John, that would be greatly appreciated. Our address is Jeff Krupa, 3801 Foxcroft Rd. Charlotte, NC 28211. We relocated from Boston after I sent the original email and I grew up in RI (background on being in RI). Thanks, Jeff 704-364-4174

The name you informed was wrongly spelled !
It must be
Gaetano Guadagnini ( Born in Turino in 1750 passed away in 1830 )
used seal:
Gaetano Guadagnini
J.B.Guadagnini Filius
Taurini fecit 17..
In the beginning of the 20th century, lots of German made violins had fake seals of this Italian master.
The only way to know whether your violin is origin or not is to have it tested on wood-rings (dentrochronology test )
If it is origin your violin is worth from 50 000 USD !!!

Sorry to hear about your loss. I was born in Hammond, In and my father had a violin made by John Ericson in 1939 and his number is 556. I would go and make payments for him. His shop was downtown on Hohman and State St. in Hammond.

He worked in Chicago for several years with another violin maker and can't remember his name but I can get it if you are interested. He left Chicago and came to Hammond and when he retired he lived in Cedar Lake with his daughter I understand if he would have stayed in Chicago he would have been just as famous as the other man, but he choose to come to Indiana.

I know a man who repairs violins and every so often he sees a John Ericson violin. I will mention to him about yours and hopefully one day it will be found. Lorraine Verrill Homner

Ericson Violin Maker
Hammond, IND 1927 (hand written)
I have started a hobby of taking in various (wooden) stringed instruments that are in poor condition & attempting to bring it back to playable condition. It is my belief that these instruments are the true treasures (it was not the instrument that sits in a museum or a collection never to be played). Aside from some cosmetic inperfections, these instruments gain it's voice once again...

Re: Violin Maker: John H. Ericson 1921 made in Hammond, Ind

This violin was made by my great-great uncle by marriage. John Ericson was married to my great-great Aunt Tillie Sturm who was a science teacher in Indiana Schools. She was born and raised in Southern IL. They married later in life and didn't have children together but I think John might have had children from a previous marriage. Aunt Tillie self-published an autobiography in 1980, the year she died at the age of 90. John died around the early 1970s but I can't remember exactly when. Might have been late 60s. I was born in 66 so I don't have memories of him but my older sister does. We have a photograph of him in his studio trying to teach her violin. Would you be interested in a copy of this if we can dig it up? When I find my copy of Tillie's book, I can give you more info including his parent's names and birth dates, places etc. He was a very interesting person. Nobody in my immediate family knows how many violins he made. Pieces of unfinished violins and his tools and forms and frames remained in the garage at Aunt Tillie's home until she died and we don't know what happened to that stuff either. You can email my mother, who knew him better than I, at carrot53@aol.com. Hope this helps. Stephanie Wells

I have an antique violin handed down to me from my grandfather and I'm trying to find information on this instrument. The label inside states that it's a Carlo Berqonzi model with the names Carmen and Koch and a goat logo inside an oval. Indricate scroll work on chin plate, tuning pegs and tail piece. This is a very old violin. Haven't been able to find anything on this instrument from my local library. I had a violin teacher play this instrument and she stated it had the best tone she'd ever heard. Any help appreciated.

I have a very nice violin made by "A.J. Erickson, Boston MA, 1911" that my grandfather bought around 1920, and my father played as well. It is a superb instrument, all who play it agree, and my understanding was that the maker worked at the Chickering Piano factory in Boston, and was a luthier in his spare time. I wonder if this could be the father of John Ericson? I've tried to find info on other Erickson Violins, but this is the closest I've come. John Ericson is also the one in "Violin Makers of the United States" , a hardcover tome that includes amateurs, but not A.J. Erickson
