My 3x G Grandfather George Steven from Caithness was a serving police constable on Clydeside, Glasgow with the Clyde Navigation Trust from 1861. In 1866, this private police force came under the jurisdiction of Glasgow Police. George remained a serving policeman until his death in 1875. Proof of occupation is from his 1875 death record, 1871 census, birth records of four children, 1861-1874, all born in Tradeston, Glasgow; newspaper articles from Glasgow Herald about an arrest he made Oct 18 1871, which stated he had an exemplary record of ten years.
My problem? I went in person to the Mitchell Library, Glasgow, which retains Glasgow City Archives containing the records of Strathclyde Police and its predecessors. (ref: SR22/38-70).
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO RECORD OF HIM IN ANY PERSONNEL FILES HELD BY MITCHELL LIBRARY, GLASGOW!! He is also not on the computerized file they have of all serving police constables. Searches of the "Resignation Book" at the Mitchell library also exclude him.
Can anyone help me find another source for historical records for this Glasgow police constable?
