Police in Brecon and London

In the 1861 census Thomas FARMER, who was a Saddler by trade, suddenly appears listed as a Police Constable in Crickhowell. In 1865 he emigrates to Australia as a Saddler so he can't have been a Police Constable for long. Does anyone know how i might find out more about his time as a Constable?
Thomas's brother, Benjamin FARMER b.1848, also a Saddler, moved to London in the late 1860s and in the 1871 census he is also listed as a Police Man living on Templar Road, Hackney. His wife dies in 1872 and Benjamin returns to Brecon to be a Saddler again. Again how can i find out more about his time as a Police Man?
It seems funny that they both became Policemen in different parts of the UK for such short times - are there links between the forces?
I also find that another brother, John FARMER, is living in London at the time of Benjamin's death in 1879, this time on Temple Street. As he doesn't list his occupation on Benjamin's death certificate i don't know what he is doing there, but i wonder if he too joined up.
Any help is greatly appreciated

I am trying to do something similar with an ancestor who was possibly a Constable in Brecon around the 1870's. I am told that the Dyfed/ Powys Police museum may have records of personnel at the time. Unfortunately the museum is closed at the moment for some kind of re organisation. Good luck.

Ah thankyou for telling me about the museum - I will have to try there when its back open again. What was the name of your ancestor - I have come across many of the other constables that worked in Brecon in the newspaper articles. Thomas's father Benjamin who was a saddler as well as Town Crier of Brecon was also the Sheriff's Officer and bailiff so there was a lot of interaction with the constables in Brecon.

His name was John Jackson, he was a soldier who was based in Brecon and married a local girl. He ended up settling in Brecon after his service was complete. He would have been in the police 1870-1885 maybe. All i have is an entry on a Marriage certificate unfortunately, he has been tough to follow.
