Saw your cross-post, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner! If you can get hold of a copy of Railroad & Locomotive Historical Society Bulletin No. 116 (I believe from 1967), there is a history of the Wisconsin & Northern. According to a correspondent on a Yahoo Groups list, this line was absorbed into the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie (Soo Line).

Hope that helps!

Jim

i am new to this web site and found it accidently. my grandfather worked for the milwaukee road for 52 years his second time around. he was forced to retire at the young age of 70 in 1960 and lived to 102 years with fine health until the last few months. i have his lifetime pass and a few other momentos. he worked with mr. harley and mr davidson at the time they built the first motorcycle at the shops. i guess thats why the call the harley's "road iron". i worked at the milwaukee shops from 1970 to about 1975. my uncle was the union business rep for the machinists union. at one time there were 21 of my relatives working for the milaukee road. it was nice to find this site and will check it again soon. hope i have not bored anyone too much. happy holidays to all.

Looking for more info on this railroad.

Photo attached is on a postcard backing, sent by my Grandfather, Carl Sandberg, to his brother Phillip dated 19 April 1907. I don't know how long he worked for this railroad as by December 1910 he was in Bakersfield per another postcard. In the next couple of years he gave up railroading & moved back to WI to farm. His 2 brothers, Phillip & William, were also railroadmen.

Photo was taken on 7 March 1907 per Carl's message at the Shawano, WI depot. Was this a special occasion. I enlarged the photo but was unable to clearly make out the faces so don't know if my grandfather is actually in the picture.

You can find a good history of the line (Marinette, Tomahawk & Western) in Lincoln County on the following link:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~wilincol/railroads.htm

Sounds like the tracks have been gone for quite a while. I can't speak to the actual route alignment, though.

Good luck with your research!

Jim

My grandfather told stories about living near RR tracks and the engineers threw coins to them as they went by. I know they lived on Spirit Falls Rd., Spirit Fall, WI, but I don't see a sign of railroad tracks near this road. They lived there between 1913 and 1924. I would like to know where the tracks were and where the property could have been located. In the 1990's there are only a handful of homes on this road.

I think there were three tunnels and tunnel number three was the longest and most dangerous. Probably was the Chicago, St Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway that your ancestor worked for. If you haven't found anything in Elroy, Monroe the next county along the line would be a good bet. The Monroe County, WI Rootsweb page has a newspaper index for Sparta, Wisc.

Also, if you find nothing, post your query on the railroad accident board. There are two very competent people on the board that go out of their way to help.

Have you tried to find an obit in the local papers where his parents lived?

Ann C Fitzgerald

Thank you so much Jim!! You've been a great help to me. Now, I'm on the track for more information on the death of his son James Jr.
From the Milw. Sentinal- 1881
"James P. Haslam was run down by a locomotive and killed near the roundhouse in Berlin"( Green Lake Co.) "Saturday afternoon." 21 may 1881 is his death date. I can't believe someone could get hit by a locomotive, close to a roundhouse, surmising the locomotive was probably going much slower then normal, because of heading into the roundhouse. Would I be able to find out anymore information, through the Rail Road information? I'm aware that there is only so much written information, yet available.
Cindy

This is a tough call given the location of Robinson Ave, but I would say he worked for the Milwaukee Road (Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul). I checked the 1890 directory for Robinson Ave. and there are plenty of railroad occupations among the residents, but only one lists the railroad and that's the CM&StP. Also, Robinson Ave. ran into the Milwaukee Road at Kinnickinnic (KK) Ave. (there was a station there), and a Milwaukee employee could catch a caboose hop to the main yards north or east on a branch to the Rolling Mills yard. The Chicago & North Western's Madison Division paralleled the Milwaukee line at the KK Bridge, so the C&NW is not beyond the realm of possibility. Certainly not definitive, but if I had to vote, I'd say he worked for the Milwaukee.

I've attached a section of Cram's 1901 Milwaukee Map showing the area.

Jim

Living in Elroy, he probably worked for the C&NW. They destroyed all their accident reports when they sold out to Union Pacific. Don't even bother to contact them. Try the local newspapers.

If he isn't listed in the death index at the Wisconsin Historical Society, you could check the Juneau Tombstone Project. You might get lucky.

Ann C Fitzgerald

I've been looking for info about my great uncle, Patrick Fitzgerald, who was killed in a boiler accident [after 1883 before 1910] while working for the C&NW. Keep running into a brick wall since the C&NW destroyed all accident records when they sold out to the Union Pacific.
To correct my previous listing. Michael fitzgerald b9-29-1855 in Ireland died 7-17-1925 of valvular heart disease. His first wife, Catherina Lambert Fitzgerald born 3-27-1855 in La Valle, Sauk, died 7-12-1896 in Ellsworth, Pierce, Wisconsin. Michael married again in 1925 in Spokane Washington to Mamie Knee. Michael's parents, Thomas b1830/d1907 and Mary Griffin Fitzgerald b1-04-1835/d3-26-1885 [Ballyheigue] were born in County Kerry and died in Eau Claire. It was my great uncle, PATRICK FITZGERALD b1856 in Wisconsin that died in the RAILWAY ACCIDENT. Pat worked for the C&NW Railroad at the time of his death.
I found my GGGrandfather James P. Haslam listed in 1898 directory living at 860 Robinson Ave., Milwaukee, WI. Working as an Engineer, and then in the 1890 directory same address a a switchman. In the website I found him as listed under Employees of Other Railroads.
Is there anymore information from this time frame, that I could look into, and find which railroad he worked? He was on the rails almost all his life. Coming from England, signing his 1st papers of intent to become a citizen in New Hampton, Chickasaw, Iowa, about the time the Rairoad made a connection to that area, I believe from Chicago. He lived in Buffalo, Erie, N. Y., till he got his citizenship, then moved to Eveline Twp., Charlevoix, MI.where he is listed as an Engineer. Then to Milwaukee, WI., where he is listed as an Engineer in 1880 census.
I've got alot of information, but am still in need of what R.R. he worked for.
Thanks!

Looking for information regarding Theron Hawks Wallace, born in Belmont County, OH, about 1876, who worked for the Milwaukee, Chicago, St Paul railroad from about 1900 to at least 1930. He was a steam shovel engineer. His 1918 WWI draft registration card describes him as having one foot amputated. I'm looking for his employment records and any possible mention of an on-the-job accident that led to his losing a foot.

He was in the Milwaukee area 1900-1906 or so, then is found in Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, still employed by the railroad. He is listed as head of household, occupation Steam Shovel Engineer, in the 1930 census for Mason City with his wife, daughter and son-in-law Joseph Fiala. I have no death date for him.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

My great-great grandfather Michael Burke worked as a switchman in the Milwaukee railroad yards and was killed when he was crushed between two railroad cars.
He was married to Maud Bohn and he had two sons, Bernard Joseph Burke (my great-grandfather) born 9-14-1895 and Russell Burke born 1898. I think the boys were rather young when their father died.
Any help in finding additional information about this branch of my family tree would be most appreciated. I'm stuck and don't know where to go from here.

Looking for info about any of these surnames who were workers for the railroads in WISCONSIN and Illinois. My g-uncle, Mike Fitzgerald born Irl a1856 Eau Claire1880 census was killed [family said blown up] in a railroad accident. I think that in 1880 his wife had just died since his sister-in-law was caring for his children at his home in Ellsworth, Wisc. His brother Pat b1859 disappeared after the Eau Claire 1880 census. The railroad evidently had transferred him elsewhere. The other surnames in subjects, married the Fitzgerald girls and went????. Uncle Jack & Miles Fitz... went to Chicago, my grandfather, John Fitz... b1878 wisc, the engineer of the 400 of the C&NW Ry, moved to Mpls with his wife, Ivah, and children, Lamoid, Geraldine, and Marjorie who married Leo McConnell. Although, my g-grandparents [Thomas b1830 Irl & Mary b1835 Irl] were on the Eau Claire 1880 census, I can't locate them after that. All the names in 'subject' were life-long railroaders except Lamoid Fitzgerald. Any Information you have would be greatly appreciated .

Not my line, but this was on a page with an obit I wanted in the Mobile Press, Mobile AL. It was 1925.

" "BRIEF WILL WRITTEN BY RAILROAD HEAD"
Deland, Fla., Nov 29---(A.P.)---The will of the late Albert J. Earling, former president of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway, has been placed in the Volusia county clerk's office here and will be probated within the next few days, an announcement here today by R.L. Seldon, of Dayton, attorney for the Earling family, said.
Probating of the will, the attorney said, will take place as soon as the executors qualify under the Florida law. Executors of the estate are Margaret H. Earling and her three children, Sherburne M., and George P. Earling and Mrs. Hattie E. Pitts.
The attorney explained that the will was one of the most unusual ever written in that under its provisions the same disposition would have been made of the estate had there been no will written.
The estate left by Mr. Earling has an estimated value of $900,000 in property in Wisconsin and Florida, and it was left entirely to his wife and three children. One-third goes to Mrs. Earling and the remaining two-thirds is to be divided evenly among the three children.
Not more than five hundred words was required to write the will, the attorney said, it covering only two sheets of paper."
Seeking accident information

I am seeking information about my GG-Grandfather, Varcellus J. Olds. He would have married in 1880 (probably around Juneau/Sauk County. I believe he was killed between then and 1885 as my GG-Grandmother, Melvina (Lavine) Olds is listed as a widow after that. Family lore claims that he was killed while working on the RR. The store claims that he was a brakeman and was on top of a train and was killed when the train went under a trustle or tunnel? knocking him off. I do not know this to be fact nor do I know what RR company he may have worked for or where this accident may have occured. I have not been able to locate a death/burial record for him to verify his death. His parents were living in Russell County, Kansas in the 1880s census and had been living in Whiteside County, Illinois in the 1870 census so this accident may have occured anywhere between Illinois, Kansas and Wisconsin. His widow lived in Elroy, Juneau County in the 1885 Wisconsin State Census and my G-Grandfather was born January 21, 1881 in Elroy, Juneau County, so I am assuming he met my GG-Grandmother in that area and had made that his home base. Any information about him, this supposed RR accident or where I might find such information would be greatley appreciated.

John H. Taylor, general superintendent of the Lake District of the Great Northern Railway, died at his home in Superior, WI July 24th (1913), following an operation for gastritis performed about a week before his death. Mr. Taylor at one point was Division Superintendent of the Bradford Division of the Erie, with headquarters at Bradford, PA, having succeeded the late C.V. Merrick to that position. His residence in Bradford was a short one, as he resigned to enter the employ of the Great Northern. Mr. Taylor, who was a comparitively young man, was one of the most efficient railway officials in the country and his rise was most unusual. He entered the employ of the Great Northern as a Division Superintendent, and, in a few years, was promoted to the general superintendency. He is survived by his widow and family. His many friends on the Erie will regret to learn of the cutting short of so remarkable a career by his untimely death.

From the Erie Railroad Magazine, August, 1913 (P. 363)

Karen,

Your link to Elroy would suggest he worked for the Chicago & North Western. Its former line between Elroy and Sparta today is a bike trail and features several tunnels. It's very possible, then, that he could have been swept off the top of a box car by a tunnel portal. The job of brakeman in that era, by the way, was actually more dangerous than below-ground anthracite coal mining, statistically. It's very common to see reports of such accidents in the press of the day, and that is perhaps your best chance of finding something (keep in mind also that some papers stopped carrying such reports because they were so common, but a local paper reporting a local death would certainly have something). I would suggest you check with the Elroy library to see if there are any local newspaper or death indexes from that time, or perhaps local historians that might have other ideas:
http://www.elroywi.com/library.htm

More on the trail at:
http://www.elroy-sparta-trail.com/

Hope that helps somewhat!

Jim

Harvey D. PHEATT, Erie Railroad General Agent, Milwaukee

From the March, 1922 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:

The death of Harvey D. Pheatt, general agent of the Erie Railroad in Milwaukee, WI, occurred in that city February 15 (1922) following an illness of several years. He was 65 years of age. Mr. Pheatt entered the service of the Erie as general agent at Milwaukee on March 1, 1907. Prior to that date he was for many years agent of the Merchants' Despatch in Milwaukee. He was well and favorably known in shipping circles in the "Cream City," as well as among the railroad fraternity, in which he was a prime favorite. His fine personality was such that his loss will be deeply felt. Surviving are his widow, a daughter, a son and three brothers.
