I have been searching for information on my great great great Uncle John Frances Martens, born February 26, 1873 in Allouez WI and was an engineer for the railroad line that went from Milwaukee to Michigan, through Pound, Coleman WI at the turn of the century. In the 1920 and 1930 census reports, his occupation is listed as train engineer but no railroad is listed and he lived in Chicago. If anyone can tell me how I can locate information without a SS #, I would be forever grateful. Thank you.

To look for his social security number, search his name on the rootsweb SSDI index. The Railroad Board turned over their long-time and retired railroaders info to social security in the 30's or 40's. Their names are often at the end of the surname list. acf
