Re: Theatre, Portable theatres and stock companies
It has been a while since I have been on here but I have loads of production photos in my grandmothers collection - would anyone like a copy sent by email to see if they can spot any relatives?

Re: Theatre, Portable theatres and stock companies
My great grandfather, Ernest R Allen, was an actor from 1898 to about 1932. In 1922 he joined the Alfred Denville Stock Company for a winter season in Douglas, Isle of Man, at the famous Gaiety Theatre. Many rep companies tried to introduce a winter rep season in the Island but most were unsuccessful. Alfred Denville kept it going for two years 1922-23 and 1923-24. There were a lot of actors involved - and a few of them were probably local. Some of the names were: Alfred Denville, Charles Denville, Edith Rutland, Herbert Barton, Dolly Wright, Frank North, Doris Brook, Richard Ferris, Dai Phillips, Alfred Adams, Hetty Senior, Amy Brittain, Walter Melvin, Allan Hineson, Beatrice Anderson, Rex Gerrard, Violet Clare, Quiller Valerie, Edwin Davies, Leonard Tremaine, Leigh Knight, Becket Bould. My ggrandfather returned to the UK for 1923 but then came back to the Isle of Man to open his own theatre with a stock company, the Pavilion Players.

Re: Theatre, Portable theatres and stock companies
Hi My ancestor Robert George Elder was in partnership with Alfred Denville and Stanley Rogers in a theatre company in Sunderland (Silksworth) The partnership was dissolved in 1912 by Alfred Denville as far as I can tell, but continued in the names of the other partners The theatre referenced is the Hippodrome at New Silksworth but I can find no other mention of it anywhere. Has anyone got any earlier information about Alfred Denville' s theatre activities to share please?
