Hi

I wondered if anyone had any info on Newman Maurice. He was a librettist; wrote pantomimes and actor in the latter part of the 1800s - early 1900s. He was also managed the Brixton Theatre for Frederick Melville.

He and his brother Phillip also did pedestal and tap dancing under the name of Brothers Maurice.

Hi
I believe my grandfather was Newman Maurice. He used to go round the theatres and in 1931 in Reading my father was born by one of the dancers called Phylis Mawer. He was left in one of the boarding houses to be brought up.

Hi Sue

We are talking about the same Newman Maurice (Cohen). He was married to Rose Moncrieff (Isobelle Coghlan). He had a brother Philip Maurice (Cohen)(my great grand father) & they used to do pedestal & tap dancing. Philip married Mathilda Walker.

Kindest Regards

Hi Lorraine

I'm sitting with Sue Carter as we connected last week and she has pointed me to your post here. We have just worked out we are 4th cousins!

Newman Maurice (Snr) was my Great Grandfather on my maternal side. His daughter was Dorothy (Dolly my grandmother) and also had sons Gerald, Raymond (Sue's Grandfather)and Guy. I have some pictures and sheet music Newman wrote let me know if this would be of interest.

Best wishes
Andrew

Hi Sue

As I haven't heard anything more from you I wondered if you were still able to email some info on my g-g-uncle Newman maurice (Cohen). I made a mistake on my previous corres to you. Newman married Rose Isobella Coghlan who died in 1916. He then married Olive Beatrice Ball in 1918. He & his brother Philip (my g-g- grandfather) did pedestal & tap dancing under the name of The Brothers Maurice or The Maurice Brothers.

Hi,

I noticed that you've stated that Philip Cohen is your g g grandfather. I am researching my partners family tree and Philip Cohen is also her g g grandfather.

I'd be interested to know your relationship with her.

Thanks in advance,

Nikki

Hi Nikki

I already have access to your family tree. My grandfather was Newman Cohen, Phillip Cohen & Mathilda Walker's son (brother of philip George Maurice Cohen). I don't have a tree on Ancestry but have shared inof with your partner.

Hi,

So who was your father? Does your family still practice Judaism? I'm interested in finding out because my partners family do not practice any more, however many other Cohens do.

Thanks,

Nikki
