Hi,

My GGrandfather Gilbert Bain was born Rhynie Ross & Cromarty in 1833 where his father Daniel was in business there as a Shoemaker employing more than 10 men.

Gilbert moved to Aberdeen between 1881 and 1891 and became a Master Shoemaker, although previous to this he had been a Journeyman Shoemaker. I was wondering if anyone out there has any family connections to either the Shoemakers established in Rhynie in the square in 1851 -1885, or knows anything about a shoemaking guild in Aberdeen. Daniel Bain died in 1885 and I do not know whether his son Daniel continued the business or not.

Thanks.

Best regards,

Karen Bain

My great great grandfather was a shoemaker in Aberdeen in the early 1800's. a journey man was a person who was out of apprenticeship but not qualified to have their own shop I think.
