My g-grandfather worked in the Beggs & Cobb Tannery. I am trying to find out when the place closed and how to get information on it. Can anyone help?

Greetings. The Tannery was in Winchester Mass at the site of what is now the Parkview Apartments on Swanton Street.

I would expect the Winchester Public Library to be very helpful. Since most of the leather plants were in Woburn Mass, the Woburn Public Library would also be helpful.

Good luck with your search.

The Beggs & Cobb Tannery burned to the ground in 1957 or '58. I was 5 at the time and remember my grandfather(Sydney Beggs) saying that he sold the business just in time before the fire. the business was sold in 1957. There were articles in the Boston Globe about the fire. You might try their archives to pinpoint the date.

Tina:

My parents owned the beggs estate in Winchester, MA (2 Everett ave, Winchester, MA) They just sold it last November. Daniel R. Beggs was the one who built my parents home and he was born in 1875. Daniel beggs died in 1955, and the tannery moved from Winchester to ME until it closed (I believe) in the 60's. Check out a book called the "History of Winchester" MA. There is an apartment complex turned condos called the Parkwood apts. on the site of the Tannery which burned to the ground int he late 50's.

Sincerely Curt Raffi

Hi Patricia. My great grandfather was William Beggs, Born in 1842. He emigrated from Ottowa Ontario in the late 1800's He was in the leather tanning business there and started a tannery in Winchester MA in 1881. There are still a couple of Beggs' in the Winchester area, but I don't have any contact for you there. I'm also aware of a number of Beggs family members in Confluence,PA. You might try there also.

Thanks for your response. Interestingly the brother of Thomas George Beggs was William born 1842 in Oshawa (Whitby Twp.). I would love some contacts for Thomas if you could please send them.

Patricia

The apartment building is the Parkview Condominium and it was built on the Beggs and Cobb Tannery on Swanton Street.
