Bain Family - Shipwreck in Bay of Fundy approx 1761 or 1762
Father, mother and daughter drowned, but son Alexander age 8 was the only survivor of the wreck. Ship was on the way to St. John, New Brunswick. Not sure if it came from Scotland or England, or even the States. Alexander was born in 1753 or 4. Info on him is sketchy. One record shows him as being Scottish and another one states he was born in Sandwich, Mass. He was rescued by John McKenna of Checoggin, Yarmouth, N.S.

Hi Valeria,
RE: Alexander Bain. I inquired at the Sandwich, MA VR and they have no record of Alexander being born or married in Sandwich, MA. I also read someplace that he might have left Sandwich,MA to go to NS. According them, there is no record of a ship going from Sandwich in 1762. There is a record of Moses Perry and family leaving Sandwich in1761.

Re: Bain Family - Shipwreck in Bay of Fundy approx 1761 or 1762
Hi Nancy: I too believe he was not born in Massachusetts, but in Scotland. But a lot of planters were sailing up to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick during that period, so his family could have gone first to the U.S. and then on to Canada. Supposedly the ship he was on was travelling to St. John, New Brunswick. It could have sailed from Halifax, and gone around the point at Cape Forchu. We don't know for sure. I have been checking the names of ships for sometime now, but with no luck. The secret may have died with his parents. I don't think Alexander was old enough to have remembered where the ship came from. We are certain he married Sarah Perry in Yarmouth Nova Scotia on December 12th, 1774.
Moses Perry and his family came on the small schooner "Pompey" in 1761, and landed at Chebogue. It was part of a vanguard of three ships from Sandwich, Mass. It didn't say if they all made it. For all we know Alexander could have been on one of those ships. Makes you wonder, doesn't it. Moses settled on Crawley's island in Chebogue Harbour.

Re: Bain Family - Shipwreck in Bay of Fundy approx 1761 or 1762
I have often wondered if maybe they might have also come from one of the southern colonies, i.e. Virginia, PA, the Carolinas. I never thought of other ships coming with Moses Perry.
Like you, I have been looking at ships during that periond of time. I wish I knew what web site in Scotland to visit. Of course we don't know where in Scotland he was born. I can imagine the trauma Alexander had when he was rescued. I wonder if he ever talked with his children about this. Why, oh why, didn't they keep better records, i. e. computers, cameras, etc. ha. ha. Nancy

Re: Bain Family - Shipwreck in Bay of Fundy approx 1761 or 1762
Someone just gave me the name of a Hattie Perry who used to live in Yarmouth, now living in Port Greville. I emailed her this morning to see if she can spread any light on the subject. Will let you know if I find out anything.
I don't know why I keep on researching Alexander. Just this feeling that the problem has to be solved. I'm like a dog with a bone. I keep knawing at it.

Like you Valerie, I guess we are determined to "discover" Alexander. I wonder if the Clan MacBean in the US might give me an idea of where to research. I must e-mail them. Our Alexander family and descendants are in their book. they don't have a lot of information.

Sounds like a good idea Nancy. Leave no stone unturned. I keep wondering if there is anyone we can contact in Scotland, but it is a pretty big place, and a little daunting right now. But I think that is my next move, other than trying to find Bain ancestors in Yarmouth. The lady I mentioned has either changed her email address or something. It was returned to me. I will check the Yarmouth phone book and see what I can find.

Re: Bain Family - Shipwreck in Bay of Fundy approx 1761 or 1762
I'm afraid I don't know. I don't know if there were any relatives left in Massachusetts, because I believe the whole family went down with the ship, other than Alexander.
Still haven't been able to figure out whether they came straight out from Scotland and only stopped off in Massachusetts for a short time before going to New Brunswick, or if they actually came straight from Scotland to New Brunswick. It's a big mystery to everyone.

Ed,
I come from Melrose. I often wondered if CLIFF BAIN was related to my Bain. My father said no. But, at the time I wasn't doing Bain research. My father is James Garfield Bain, born in Nova Scotia, s/o James Delancey and Augusta Bell. I had an uncle in So. Boston, James Oren Bain, an uncle Frederick W. Bain from Tuftonboro, NH and a Dorothy Orchard from South Boston,MA Nancy Hunt
