Interesting to read old entries. My grandfather was Edward Heber Smalley (Smalle). He was a brother to Bland Smalle.
He came to USA sometime after his 21st birthday. He married in Arkansas, taught school in the Creek Nation, Indian Territory then farmed in Pittsburg, OK, USA sometime after 1900. My remembered riding a ferry across a river when she was 3 years old. She pass away in March of 2007..Edward never became a citizen of USA. His father Capt. daniel Smalle and his brother Ross Smalle are buried in Digby, NS.
Been to Digy and met the lady who now owns Capt. Daniel Smalle's old home. Really no help but thought you might like the history. Have you read eith of the two books written about Col. Fanning?
