I am looking for information pertaining to my great grandfather (Michael Devine) and my Grandfather Edward McGowan. According to the 1920 Philadelphia Census they were employed at the Midvale Steel Company/Nicetown/Philadelphia. I would especially be interested in any employee records pertaining to them or old photographs of the foundry. Any assistance would be
appreciated.

F.X. McGowan

My father worked for Midvale for 40 years. We lived in Germantown and he walked to work. He passed in 1975 on the way to work. Your last name is familiar. I will check my collection of his pictures for the name. Take Care.

I have a small notebook/catalogue (5X 7) from the Midvale Company that I would be delighted to send to you. It belonged to my dad who worked at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in the thirties. I has no value except to someone like yourself who has a connection to that era. I expect nothing in return except to know that it was really worth saving all these years for you! Just send a note to: emailbilllane@hotmail.com

My grandfather (William Chapman) also worked at Midvale Steel from the late 30's until mid 40's. After that he worked at the Reading railroad. I have old tax returns of his but do not have any other information (photos or employee records). Any other sites or information would be appreciated. Thanks. Bill.

Surnames: Cochrane
My father (Harry A. Cochrane) and grandfather (Henry Philip Cochrane) were employed at Midvale. I have a pic of my grandfather taken during WWII at the plant. He is standing on the table of his milling machine boring holes in the breach of an 18 inch naval gun. I also have his 1944 Navy E award with 5 stars (Each employee got to wear one of the award buttons.)

If the name Benjamin L. Jones sounds familiar to anyone let me know, he also worked at Midvale Steel Company. Ben is my husband's maternal grandfather. Have you ever tried to find someone with the last name Jones...All family members on this side have passed making the task a little more difficult than normal.

Thanks.

Go to the Wikipedia entry for Midvale Steel and go to the sources listed at the bottom of the article. Click on the "Franklin Institute and the Making of Industrial America" Guide to Microfiche listing from Lexis/Nexis. The Midvale Company records are identified there on printed page 44. You might need to contact the Franklin Institute to see if they have employee records in this collection. Good luck!

Surnames: Morton
Dave, any chance you have the surname Morton among your photos? My grandfather, Daniel Ruffner Morton, died in April 1930 as a result of an industrial accident at Midvale. Something fell from a winch, struck his leg, and a clot went to his heart.

My father William Henry Morton also worked at Midvale during the 1940's... Any information on how I can investigate the details of the accident would be greatly appreciated.
