I have just added a series on the 1863 New York City Draft Riots to my website. This series is a day-by-day account of the fighting, culled from eyewitness accounts from the police and military. Approximately 50,000 people are believed to have rioted. The 1863 riots are considered the worst in American history.

There are some police officers named in this series. If you're researching someone on the NYPD during this time period, you may want to stop by and read it. The series gives a good overview of what the police went through.

I'm glad you enjoyed the series! Since you're researching a police officer from that time period, you may want to try the following book:

"The Draft Riots in New York, July 1863: The Metropolitan Police, Their Services During Riot Week, Their Honorable Record" by David M. Barnes. It was written in 1863 and published by Baker and Godwin.

Another poster was kind enough to pass the info along to me. You should be able to find it in the library or be able to order it on interlibrary loan. I know the New York Public Library has it, but unfortunately it doesn't circulate. But someone else must have it.

Take care,

Hi. Do you happen to know if the police academy or the police museum would have a list of all active ny police officers from the 1840's to the 1860's. I am trying to find my g-grandfather's records and the records of his brother. From what I am told his brother was killed by an emotionally disturbed person, who stabbed him during a armed robbery at a grocery store. I tried looking up his name on the police memorial wall, but I don't know if it will be up there because he did not die instantly.
Thank you
Gina
