Charles McGUIRE, a police officer in New York City in the 1860's
I am looking for information on Charles McGuire, born 1835 in Ireland, and a police officer in New York City in the 1860's. The family always said he had been a polceman in New York City, and I have a photo of him in a police uniform with a high plumed hat. There are three other officers in the picture, and I'd be gald to share. The picture is markerd 229 Bowery, NY. He moved to Toledo Ohio and became a police officer there about 1870.
Any thoughts on where to begin?

I am also looking for info on my gt gt grandfather Henry P Wolfe who is listed as a policeman on NY 1860 census. I have also found him listed on the July 1 1863 Civil War Reg as a policeman as well. Have you had any luck in finding another source that may give you more info on your relative? If so please let me know. Thank You

I added the photo to my family tree McGuire 10 2009. It's public so you should be able to find it by searching for Charles H McGuire, b 29 Oct 1835 in Donegal County Ireland. I also attached it, but I haven't had a lot of luck with attaching files. If neither of those work, please feel free to e-mail me at jmajo@accesstoledo.com, and I'll e-mail it to you. I'd love to hear if you find out anything about it. Thanks for contacting me. Julie Majo

Dear Julie,
Thank you so much for the great photo. Amazing uniform. There is a police museum in NYC that I'm going to check out this week. Apparently, they have a good research department. Maybe you have been there? If not, I'll let you know if I find anything interesting about that time period. Best, Marie Abma

No, I haven't been there. I live in Toledo, Ohio and I'm not much of a traveler. Good luck with the search!

Re: Charles McGUIRE, a police officer in New York City in the 1860's
Awesome photo. I am seeking my Charles McGuire in NYC. He was probably born in Fermanagh, Ireland, around 1844. I have no other information except that his wife was probably Sarah McGrath. I am thinking that we are not related buy still wanted to comment on the great photo.

Re: Charles McGUIRE, a police officer in New York City in the 1860's
Thanks! I am so glad to come from a long line of pack rats. He has been hard to trace because there are just so many Charles McGuire's! (As you know, I'm sure). I was able to determine he was from Donegal, Ireland, from his son's baptismal record. His wife was Margaret Sullivan. Good luck with your search!

Re: Charles McGUIRE, a police officer in New York City in the 1860's
I have just been able to have translated a journal from my Great Great Grandfather who immigrated to the US in 1867 from Switzerland via France and landed in New York. He was an iron worker and was very interested in buildings and specifics of life. There is a great description of the buildings in NYC, the streets, the "traffic" and the policeman. It was fascinating to see your photo and read his description. The plumes were apparently not a "dress" uniform, but something that they wore regularly, from what he describes.
