There is a gravestone in Kirkmaiden Cemetery (Wigtownshire, Scotland) that records a great uncle of mine, Alexander McGuffog, dying in New Orleans, U.S.A. on 29th August 1849, aged 28 years. Both his brothers were mariners based in Drumore (Wigtownshire, Scotland) and I'm guessing Alexander would have also been a mariner. I am trying to trace his death in New Orleans and also which ship he was on to acertain whether he was a mariner or actually immigrating. Also, whether he was on a ship transporting cotton, or, horror of horrors, slaves.
His ship would most probably have sailed from Drumore (also spelt Drummore), Port Patrick or Stranraer, although it could also have sailed from Glasgow or even Liverpool.
Can anyone offer some advice on how to go about tracing this AND finding out more about his brother's lifes as mariners. I have tried researching the records on this site, but so far no luck.
Thanks, Laurna
