My Great Grandfather, Mike Glad, was a bridgetender In Lockport on the bridge that turned in the middle of the canal. I believe this would have been sometime between 1910 and 1955. Any information anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. I'm having a very hard time finding anything about him. Thank you.

Have you researched the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census records? His marriage records? Death certificate? Also the library in Lockport has quite a bit of canal information. There is also a museum in Lockport in connection with the canal.

I don't know where to find the 1900 or 1910 census records. Also, part of the problem is that I live in California now and do not have access to the Lockport area. Twenty years ago, I lived in Joliet. Too bad I wasn't interested in genealogy then when not only did I live there, I still had relatives alive to get information from. If I hadn't had kids of my own, I may not have been doing it now either.

If there are websites that you know of that may help in my search, I would greatly appreciate it. I subscribe to Ancestry.com already.

Thank you for your reply and help.

You can research the Illinois 1900 and 1910 census records at a local LDS FHL (Latter Day Saint Family History Library). To find one in your area, go to www.familysearch.org and click in the third column (on the far right). There also may be a genealogical library near you which would have the Illinois census records.

If you're not familiar with the LDS FHL on your first visit you will order the film for the census. When the library receives the microfilm, they will contact you and you can review the film at their facility.

You can also order a search from the Illinois State Archives...but it will take about three months to receive a reply. If I can find the web site, I will e-mail it to you.

Am not sure if you can request Canal or census information from the Lockport library, but it's worth a try....the Reference Librarian is Andrea Zoelle and the e-mail address I have for her is: azoelle@htls.lib.il.us The library's FAX 815-838-9131.

I believe the Newberry Library will also reply to requests, but there is a fee. Their website is www.newberry.org

Cathy,

You should really contact Andrea at the Lockport Library, she is very helpful. I was there about 2 weeks ago visiting but had been calling weeks ahead of time. The library has lots of books on the canals. Andrea looked through several sources and came up with some stuff on my relatives. She was also able to contact the Joliet library and have them look through their stuff, since Joliet is the county seat.

BTW, my great grandfather was killed at a stone quarry down the road from Lockport in Lemont in 1893. The Lockport library has copies of newspapers in the area on microfilm, however, I found out that they do not have many of the newspapers before 1900.

Good luck,

Kristine
