I am looking for any information on the McAdam/McAdams ships and crews that anyone may have. I am also looking for relatives of James McAdams in Painesville/Lake Co. Andrew, Alexander, William, John, Joseph and Peter McAdams in Ashtabula/Ashtabula Co Ohio
.
I have a great deal of information I would like to exchange with other relatives of James (b) 1809,(d) 1889, his sons, and James siblings that were involved in shipping on the great lakes.

I do not have any information on your particular family, but I've been wondering about researching shipmen on Lake Erie since my gggrandfather, Thomas McVetty,(1820- 1908) was a ship captain on Lake Erie, evidently around the same time as James McAdams. That's about all I know about his work, though he lived in Buffalo, NY, and in Fort Erie, Ontario. What information have you found on ships and crews? Do you have suggestions on how to find info?

Do you know about the Acontias Ship on the great lakes, that Mr. McVetty was captain of?

In November 1963 at Clay Banks on Lake Erie, the Acontias. a schooner, was carrying a load of Wheat and sunk.
This is the only martime historical reference I have found that has any good information.

I only know the information that is published at the Martime Museum link that I gave you. I do not know of Mr. McVetty. And their is no refence to him, in any information I have on my McAdams family that were seaman on the Great Lakes. But if I come across any information on him during the research of my family. I will post it for you to see.

Copy the link I sent you in the original replay back to you. It will give you information on the ship and Mr. McVetty. Their may be more information about him on the website, you will just have to search through it carefully.

Thank you for the link- I found a couple of references to Thomas McVetty that I had never known existed. Will appreciate any other info you run across.

Hi,

I don't know of a link to those you mention but I have been looking for information on McAdam(s) in NE Ohio over the years. My G-grandfather Owen McAdam resided on the West bank of the Cuyahoga in Cleveland about 1876 until he passed away in 1888. He married Mary McCue there soon around 1876. We think he came from Co. Monaghan in Ireland around 1875 and was born around 1854 to Edward McAdam and Susan Lenan. We're not sure how he got there but we have thought about the ships and sailors. Cleveland City Dir showed a James living on West bank at times during those years and also Andrew, a ship's captain, perhaps related to those you mention in your email. I'd be interested in any information about McAdam(s) in NE Ohio. I still live in the area.

Thanks,
Tim McAdams
