Family tradition has that my ancestor was in the '49 Gold Rush - that's all we know. Does anyone know if a census or other list was ever taken of the men who were in the gold fields at this time?
Thanks

California was covered by the 1850 US Census, if your 49'r was there in 1850 he had as good a chance of being enumerated as anywhere else. There are several sources to check, ancestry.com s census images and AIS census transcript and many of the CAGenweb county sites have links to a searchable 1850 CA US census. Post more info and I'm sure other can give more directions to search CA.

I always wondered whether or not a census taker would have bothered to go into the goldfield camps and enumerate all those people, knowing they were there temporarily, and some probably hard to reach.
I do have access to the census. Can you tell me which counties were involved in the '49 Gold Rush?
Thanks

You are still in the abstract, Ca had 8 Counties with gold mining in 1850, then add the support counties, for supplies transport or wintering over you can add another 12 or more.
Yes, extensive attemps were made to get a good count, even to the enumerators traveling into the gold camps, hotels and brothels. The count was done during the fall months of Oct and Nov. Since some of the camps were in the mountains over 7,000 ft elevation, these camps closed up once the snows started.
If you have access to ancestry.com, search your name, US, CA keyword 1850 and then followup on the name matches.
Counties in existence with heavy 49'r populations were:
Butte, Calveras, El Dorado, Mariposa, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Tuolumne and Yuba. In 1852 these counties were subdivided to create new counties.
If you don't have ancstry.com, post your name and state or country of origin and birth date and I take a look.

Thanks so much for the reply and the offer to do a lookup. My ancestor's name is Edward Kelley (or Kelly), born 1804, Ireland. He would have come from Wabash Co., Indiana, where he was living at the time.

I live in the midst of the Goldrush country in California
and also full access to Ancestry. Would be helpful to have ages. I'll give it a try for you.
