Interestingly Ann Shutt was the brother of Richard Shutt and Thomas Shutt both glass manufacturers. Thomas Shutt was credited as the major player behind the British Crown Glass Company and Joseph Stock was his partner. Any knowledge of the other Shutt's involvement in the glass industry would be appreciated. Both Richard Shutt and his father (also Richard) ended up in London - the son at least involved in glass

Hi By any chance do the stock families in your tree include Joseph Stock's who were married into the Shutt families, in particular Thomas Shutt but probably also Richard Shutt. Very interested to exchange info if a match. thanks

Hello! I stumbled upon some interesting information that explains the heavy concentration (and movement of workers) in the Newcastle, Liverpool and Stourbridge areas -- a book called "The Labor Aristocracy Revisited" by Takao Matsumura. This link may provide a partial reading: http://books.google.com/books?id=4BO9AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA27&am.... Anyway, sounds like it was just good economics: Newcastle had good waterways, Stourbridge had good clay, etc. My ancestors emigrated from the UK to the US in the late 1800s, establishing themselves first in Ottawa, Illinois, which was a center for US-based glassmaking due to its superior-quality sand (used for glass). Then, a decade or so later, they moved again, this time to the shores of Lake Erie, in Sandusky, Ohio, which was conveniently located about midway between industrial centers of Detroit (Michigan) and Cleveland (Ohio). Hopefully in a few years, I'll be able to travel to the UK w/the hubby and kids ... one of the places I would like to visit is the World of Glass museum in St. Helens (that and the Black Country Museum in the West Midlands). Now that I've done a bit of family tree research, the locations will be much, much more meaningful to visit, not just places on a map. Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to all on this thread. Best regards, Jenny (Hawkes) Jenkins, Westerville, Ohio, USA

Hi.
There is a Greenall tree on the internet for BerryMckenna but i think they may of mixed two familys up Mary jane Greenall who married John james Pearey 1855 in prescot and on the 1881 census this family is at 5 Bishop St. Parr 9 years daughter of John Greenall and Jane Marsh -- they have a John and jane Greenall in Pemberton on the 1881 census down in their tree which i think is the wrong family On the marriage the fathers are Thomas Greenhall and henry marsh -- Thomas married a Ann ]Plumbley }? and they lived in Parr children John 1828 George 1826 Margaret 1838 the Thomas and Ann Greenhall and their children are in the Berry mcenna tree which is right Dont know what you have.
Suzanne

Hi again,

Yes,I've got all the UK records for Uncle Sid.I was about 12 when he died.
Giving the episode somr more thought and clutching at straws,my mother (Louisa Pearey,Sid's sister,)used to tell a 'family myth-type story' that when she was born her aunt (?) in the USA tried to persuade my grandmother to name her 'Mary Jane'. Obviously the persuasion didn't work and there were no more stories relating to the US connection.
What I need to do is a little bit of detective work.I think that any US connection would most likely be on my grandmother's side (she was born a 'Greenall').Indeed the US family might not even be Greenall, depending whether it was a man or a woman who emigrated.
A riddle indeed !

Speak soon,

Ken

Hi,
Sorry for the delayed response - I am just getting used to the idea of checking the message board for posts and whatnot.
Georgia is a bit of a drive from Ohio. My brother-in-law is a big University of Georgia football fan, but the rest of us up here in Greater Columbus (OH) are mainly Ohio State U (Buckeyes) fans. Do you follow US football at all? My dad, who passed away almost four years ago, originally from Walsall (West Midlands) UK, played football (soccer) in his youth, but took up following American football when he relocated to Ohio in the 1950s.
My email address is jennifer.a.jenkins@live.com.
I'm probably going to take a little breather away from genealogy for a little while, with the holidays fast approaching and much else to do with too little time.
Take care,
Best regards,
Jenny (Hawkes) Jenkins
Westerville, Ohio, USA

Hi again,

Just being exact about the geography.Bishop Wearmouth,Monkswearmouth etc are parishes in the town of Sunderland, which is in the diocese of Durham.People from Sunderland are known as Maccams (no one knows why) whereas people from Newcastle on Tyne are Geordies. There is still bitter rivalry between the two places based on their respective soccer teams.
Sunderland has a history of glass making - when the industry moved south from NonT.When that petered out the Peareys (and presumably the Atkinsons) moved south - either to places like Bristol and Stourbridge or directly to St Helens.
Gateshead (again part of the Durham diocese), slopes down to the river on the south bank of the Tyne facing NonT on the north bank (NonT was not part of the Durham diocese. For centuries it was administered as part of Northumberland from Morpeth).

Ken

Hi Jenny,

And a Merry Christmas to you and the family.

You put a question mark after 'Abram'. It's a very ancient suburb of Wigan - which is about 14 miles from St Helens. Obviously the Atkinsons were still in the glass industry, although Abram was a mining village in the main. When I was young,in the 1950's, the glass industry in St Helens (there because of the first canal in the UK - the 'Sankey Navigation' plus coal from the Lancashire pits plus good quality sand from the surrounding countryside)employed 40 or 50.000 people - mainly in Pilkingtons but also in numerous bottle and houseware factories. Now there are about 2500 employees working in the float glass factory owned by the Japanese !

Speak soon,

Ken

Hello, Ken, A very merry Christmas to you and yours, as well! Based on UK census data form 1861, it looks like my Atkinson forebears lived at 82 Glover St., Eccleston, St Helens. They had moved to Firs Lane, Westleigh, Lancs for the 1871 census. Then, I think they were at Stock's Building, Plan Lane, Glass Works, Abram. (?) in 1877.
Best of luck in your search efforts with the other database.
Happy New Year.
Jenny Jenkins, Westerville, Ohio, USA

Having said that, I have had difficulty finding the GRO birth cert for John Atkinson (1839, presumably in/near Gateshead, Durham, England), and the first and last names are so common, particularly for that timeframe in that part of England. I need to get the GRO birth certs for a younger sibling (post-1838) and hopefully will be able to conclusively tie the links together ... but that's a project that will take a little while to accomplish! Best regards, Jenny Jenkins, Westerville, Ohio, USA

Hi, I have fewer children listed for the family, the primary one being John Atkinson. I tie him to Joseph Atkinson through John's 8 April 1860 marriage cert to Sarah Burrows, St. Peters Parr, Prescot, Lancashire, from GRO, which notes father's name and surname as Joseph Atkinson and father's rank/profession as glass maker. (Sarah's father is Joseph Burrows, miner).

Hi Suzanne,

I thought I was seeing or reading double - because as you will see from her postings,Jennifer Jenks is making similar contributions about the Atkinson family.Ergo, are you two related ? To put our several enquiries on an even keel, this is the message I just put through to Jennifer:-"The similarities between the Peareys and the Atkinsons are quite striking. The Peareys were glassworkers in Bishop Wearmouth before moving to Eccleston StHelens (where I was born). I bet they were neighbours there. I am about to take out a subscription to Findmypast - the UK's premier geneaology website.Once I do,I'll look at the 1841 to 1871 Censuses to identify addresses, proximities and other details of the two families.I'll be in touch early in the New Year."

Have a great Xmas

Ken

Hello, What can I tell you, in particular? They emigrated from UK to US in 1880 w/several children (to include my great-grandfather Allen); they first lived in Anderson, Indiana, then relocated to Sandusky, Ohio, which is where they both died and were buried in the early 20th century. Can you please tell me if you need any further information? Hopefully you can link to what I've saved to their records in my "Jenny's Family Tree" database? I've been trying to locate the birth cert for John, but thus far have not been successful -- too common a name, I guess. Best regards, Jenny Jenkins, Westerville, Ohio, U.S.A.

Hi Jim, Think of 67 and 68 like the first two digits of a zip code. They relate to specific areas in France. If you google France 67 or France 68 you can see them. 67 is Bas-Rhin in the Alsace area. 68 is Haut-Rhin in Alsace.

Sorry, Luc did not send me the link to the registers of emmigration. The link I sent was for a variety of French genealogical sites. I thought it was among them.

I will ask him where those are online.

Hi Janice,

Just in case you didn't receive my email ?

"Wow,that was a surprise - you responding to my Ancestry.com posting with regard to my mother's family (the Peareys) after 4 years !

Coincidentally,we actually lived in Eccleston in the 1970's - we were in fact born in St Helens,Eccleston being one of the parishes.

Have you based your research via Ancestry ? The best website is 'Findmypast.com' - a UK resource encompassing all Census from 1841 plus BMDs plus lots of parish records.I have also accessed the St Helens FHS.So,we have lots of information and resources to share with you.

We moved to the USA 6 years ago to live in Georgia. So,not too far from you in Ohio."

Best wishes

Laura
Thanks for your most recent information. Please excuse my ignorance but I don't understand your reference to Department 67 and 68. And when you refer to registers, what registers are you talking about? You mentioned an 1828 passport application but the link you provided was for passenger lists, none of which were in the 1828 +/- timeframe. Sorry I am not more perceptive.

Thanks so much for your continuing efforts.

Jim

Hi Jim, I just got this from Luc Stenger. Hopefully it will help you. Regarding this request I finally got some news !

A Jean Jacques (Jacob) STENGER from BOUXVILLER in Alsace applied for a passport in 1828 (so for emigration)
Beware you have 2 localities with the same name, one in Departement 67 and one in Departement 68.
I would suggest historically starting with 67. Registers are available online so this person should go through the registers carefully.

http://www.genealogylinks.net/europe/france/passenger-lists....

I don't have the answer to your question, but coincidentally, my family (John Atkinson, wife Sarah, and multiple children) also relocated from Gateshead (Newcastle-Upon-Tyne) Durham area to Eccleston (St Helens) Lancashire during the same timeframe. The census puts them in Bishop Wearmouth Durham in 1841; by 1851, they had relocated to Eccleston St Helens. John and at least one of his sons were in the glass-making industry. I wonder if perhaps our families knew each other those many years ago. I live in central Ohio (USA); my email is jennifer.a.jenkins@live.com, if you'd like to correspond. Cheers!

Jim, I am a Stenger descendant. My 6th and 8th Great Grandmothers were both named Anna Stenger and both married Walter men. This line goes back to the 1400s in the Spessart area of Germany. I credit Janet Nichols (who I affectionately call my genie fairy godmother! She is my 3rd cousin) with helping learn how to do this the right way. Yes it can be daunting but it is learnable. Send me your direct email because I have some things you may want to take a look at. You can reach me at lbozzay@relaquest.com.

Laura
I am realizing more and more each day that this genealogical research thing is far from easy. As a matter of fact it is just plain hard, and if you don't know your way around the masses of databases, parish registers, search techniques, etc., etc., you can burn up a whole lot of time getting absolutely no where.

When I come across someone like you, who obviously has learned how to navigate many of the pitfalls and landmines, I am amazed at what you know and how you can separate the wheat from the chaf. I know that you don't hit all home runs and still have your share of strikes and fouls. But you obviously enjoy this stuff.

My hat is off to you and your network. You are all an inspiration to us relative newbies. And as for giving you a little bit of time to work through things, my dear, you take all the time you need. And if somehow I can help, I am more than ready to do whatever.

Thank you again for all your time and effort.

Jim Davis

Jim I think several things go on...
1. Sometimes the name is Stenger, Stanger, Staenger, Stinger, Stingre.... so you have to check all of them.
2. Names sort of came down in the families. I have lots of Jabobs at various times sometimes with Jacob (Jacques and sometimes as Hans or John because not all transcribers get what names equal each other) as a first name and sometimes as a second name. Often the family called these folks by the second name. So he may be on a list as Jean or Martin or something else.
3. Not all records from that time still exist. Always an issue.
4. Not everything has been transcribed.
5. Alsace Lorraine is a big area. Without a village it is hard to know where to look.
6. Some Stenger were glassmakers and they are easier to find because of the ties to the glass factories. This one seems to be a landlord... he may have a family connection to glass but we don't know that.

Now the good news... I have several very accomplished Stenger researchers looking at this and I see I have about 20 emails I need to look through. There may be something in one of them. I was out of town and just got home... so give me a little bit of time to work through them.

Laura

Laura
You said what I was afraid you would say - the possibilities are many many. It seems like I have looked at a million passenger lists looking for the Stengers but maybe the 2nd million will be more fruitful.

Thanks
Jim

I have seen family leave from Le Havre, Rotterdam, and ports in England. I have seen then arrive in NY, Philadelphia, Boston, New Orleans and Galveston... also coming in via Canada. There was not just one route...

I checked Castle Garden (NY) at the time and did not see them.

Laura

Laura

Assuming Jacob Stenger Sr. and his family lived in Alsace, Larraine, and assuming the family emigrated to the USA in the 1820/1835 timeframe, what would have been the most likely port of departure and port of arrival in the US. I assume there was a most "popular" route from France to America.

Thanks for all of your time and asistance.

Jim
