I am writing the first book from the American point of view about 19th century rotunda panoramas. These were the biggest paintings in the world, 50 x 400=20,000 square feet, housed in their own rotundas which were 16-sided polygons, Chicago in 1893 had 6 panorama companies and 6 panorama rotundas. Wehner's named firs appears in 1873 EDWARD'S CITY DIRECTORY OF CHICAGO:Wehner, William(Wehner & Co)crockery and glassware,280 North Avenue, residence 282 North Avenue; in 1874/5 the business address was 326 Division and residence at 391 Division--through 1882,when this business was sold to J.W.Toms Chinaware (326 E.Division)--citation in ORIGIN,GROWTH AND USEFULNESS OF THE CHICAGO BOARD OF TRADE 1885,p.363--New York Crockery Store,J.W.Toms Proprietor,No.326 East Division Street--"Mr.Toms succeeded W.Wehner in 1883" Mr. Wehner produced panoramas from 1885-88 in downtown Milwaukee--2 units of BATTLE OF ATLANTA,2 units of BATTLE OF MISSIONARY RIDGE & LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN,3 units of JERUSALEM ON THE DAY OF THE CRUCIFIXION, and in fall 1888 removed to San Jose/ Palo Alto to his wine ranch and started the white wine industry--see THE WEHNER MANSION on-line. Much info to share. My great aunt was an artist/model in Wehner's Milwaukee panorama studio. Info to share
